Since this is all you post about isn't it time for you to troll somewhere else? Why don't you move to iPhone hardware and post about the original iPhone not being able to go past 3.1.3 and only having EDGE speed?

I'm now the proud owner of a Nexus 7.  My iPad will soon be factory reset, turned off, and tossed in the junk drawer.  I'm here to unsubscribe from email notifications.

But I'll say this one final time.   My problem isn't that my iPad won't ever see iOS 6.

My problem is that the iTunes / iStore implmentation does two things wrong--in my eyes as a device owner and software developer.

1) For the apps I already own, the system doesn't allow me to go back to the "previous" version or in any way "undo" an update that might cause the app to stop working.  As an end-user this is most unforgivable because it means a bad update can cause a loss of functionality with no way to correct it.

2) For apps I don't own yet, the system doesn't keep available the "last supported version" for a device. Once a vendor posts an update that requires iOS6, that app is forever unattainable for iOS5 users.  As an end user this is annoying because I can't afford to buy every single iPad app I want to try "right this second"  As a developer this represents potential lost revenue as devices get handed-down to people who may use them differently.

It's not the loss of support.  It's the loss of existing functionality that matters!

I know it is obvious why Apple is doing this ...greed , well sorry to tell you you have just lost a family of customers , I was about o buy 3 ipads for the kids and was about to renew my phone contract with an iphoine 5 ... I will enjoy my new Samsung and which ever tablets I now choose . Your greed has just cost you and since i am the purchaser for a school board that has been using Apple in the past ... big mistake , last purchase was well north of 1m $ , hope your happy with your decision ;-)

Ive been trying to get that same point across here for months. I sent it via Apple fedback and I also sent it to Exec, but you managed to do it so much more succinctly than I ever did! Thank you Melgish!

I for one have almost stopped buying apps now, as most/many that I want are not available on ios4/5, but I refuse to be cajoled into buying the next iOS device simply because I cant get the odd app for my current iOS. If Apple wants to keep me buying then leave the last supported versions for each iOS online and available for purchase.

I wonder how much faster Apple's 50 billion app countdown would be going now if all of the ios3/4/5 owners across the world could still actualy download half the apps they would like to?

Lies: When In the Settings App, I click on Software Update, I get the message "Your software is up to date" !!!

Think about this.  I collaborate with about 10 other people from all over the world, and when we all get together, we use Ipads to coordinate- so here is where Apple have really upset the applecart- I cannot use agendamaker, which we all thought was a good app to use, so I cannot work dynamically with the group, and so as the group's number 3, this inconveniences EVERYBODY, and EVERYBODY is a CEO in their own right.  The decision was made in our meeting that 160 stores would NOT get Ipads, because the business could not justify, the staff time and productivity loss of corporate investment in Apps that could be made redundant again, within 24 months!!

Your OS IS up to date.  You just can't get past IOS 5- it's the Apple law!

I don't know if you saw my previous posts, but I went into the Apple store, they gave me $300 off any new Ipad.  Now if they'd said, hand yours in, we'll give you $500, and transfer everything for you, the risk that they wouldn't stitch me up again in 2 years would be significantly lower, but to spend another $8-900 and risk it again-sorry-no go.

I went to the Apple store on N.Michigan Avenue in Chicago. They told me they do not do in-store exchange of iPad1 models, but told me Apple has a mail-in program.

Has anybody tried it ?

I went to the Apple Store in London, and was offered $300 (£200) off the latest Ipad and did not need to hand in my old but immaculately kept doorstop v1 Ipad 64Gb

I am outta here, buy it if you need. I love ipad mini!!

Another app just failed on my iPad1 last night: Google+. Can't run the old version anymore, tried to update it but can't because the app now needs iOS 6 for some ridiculous reason. This is madness.

Knowing yourself to be in a vulnerable position re the version of iOS you are stuck at, it would be a good idea to check the hardware specs required by the latest version of apps before you choose to attempt a fruitless update.  The version which worked will still work. Updating apps is not mandatory.
