No, the root of the problem, and other similar problems, is people never do backups.

The second part of the problem is that the iTunes Store should not let apps be updated when the device does not support the new version/iOS.

As for your example, with more software now being sold as a download expect to see the same issue on computers.

At last!! Without a single word to its community, Apple now allows use of previous Apps that can be downloaded by those of us who 'dared' to own The Ipad, when there was no other.  We still don't know if these forums work though.  Here's a really radical concept- Apple listen to your customers, and talk to them, or at least respond to them, just a little, and if you did this on purpose, instead of by accident, admit it. Indeed! I posted this a few days but the powers that be at Apple decded to delete my post as Id put a link in it to the macrumours site noting the point.

But anyway, Im very happy theyve finally dealt with this issue and I almost have all my apps back for my backup 3G. That being said, some companies are not allowing back versions, BBC and Google as two examples. Also, some app versions do not maintain full working ability, eh Whatsapp. Oh well, I guess every silver lining has a grey cloud :-)

Reading these posts is making me furious, not only with Apple, but with many of the respondents.  Furious and sad.  For those of you who think "jeez, that old iPad is already 3 years old...ancient...get over it", I say take a look at what you're really saying. Planned obsolescence is in great part what's wrong with lots of our world today. Am I alone in thinking that Apple is treating my expenditures cheaply and carelessly?  I spent a good chunk of money buying that first iPad,  some $500 or more, if memory serves.  There is nothing wrong with advancement and creating new products, it is a good,,desirable, necessary thing.  But for Apple to say "ok, now we are going to wipe out the value of the $500+of your hard earned money you spent a few years back just because we want to WITHOUT HONORING AN INDIVIDUAL'S financial circumstances, is rude, surly, inconsiderate thinking!!!  And it contributes to planet pollution, contributes to nurturing a toss away mentality.  Everything becomes dispensable under this kind of thinking. marriages, jobs, commitments and connections of all kinds.  Our family has many Apple products, old and new.  I personally have 3 iPods, 3 iPads, a desk top and an Air book and am on my what, 5th iPhone...  It's not about being stupid or old school or a boring old fart...I'm 65...  No, I believe I have the right to hold on to my "old" investment and get use out of it while the darn thing holds together and the buttons don't break!  The old iPad in question was happily relegated to my office for photos and music only.  That was fine with me and it served a good purpose.  But when I tried syncing, Apple froze me up to a place where there were no other options than to go to a special summary page which gave me one option...to factory reset. In doing so, it made my iPad completely defunct. I can no longer sync at any level!  This is ridiculous. To the person who says get over it...your car gets old and out of date...I say, yes, but if I keep it in good condition, I can still drive it under circumstances I deem useful to me. In concept my iPad is still quite functional for limited use, but thats limited use I choose to engage in so that my $500 investment isn't lost in a mere 3 years. I have other newer iPads to use to keep me in step with modernity, but it should be my choice when I "take my old vehicle to the junkyard", not Apples!!!  This is a serious SOCIAL issue regarding the way things (don't) work in the world. Give it some thought. 

You know what infuriates me the most? They still sell the iPad 2 for $399! It's not that different from my iPad 1, then why that stupid cutoff of the early adopters? Every time I see a presentation of the new iPad, I think to myself "no, I won't let them trick me twice!". I still can use my Gаlaxу S2 with the latest Аndrоid from Сyаnogen, because it's open enough to let 3rd party developers to support a popular device. If you sell device so proprietary, take care to support it yourself, or let others do it, or at least don't practice double standards by supporting almost equally old iPad 2 just because you keep selling it, and telling me iPad 1 can't be supported. Gosh, if you've just updated Safari so it won't crash as often as after updating it to 6.x! Maybe i'm taking it too personally, but i'm insulted by the way Apple treated me as a loyal original iPad customer, and I won't support such a treatment with further investments in their hardware, at least in iPads. It's even more regretful because as a Mac user I have completely different experience -- all my Mac hardware I started buying from 2009 (man, even a "Наckintоsh" i've assembled myself!) are still very well supported and regularly updated! I wan't Apple to reconsider somehow, to acknowledge that it was a mistake, and that we deserve a better treatment. How excited we were telling about our iPads to our friends! But if now a friend asks me as an iPad owner if I can recommend him buying it, I answer based on my experience: "You'd better buy a popular Аndrоid mоdеl supported by Суаnоgеn. It will likely have longer support". And that betrayal (again, I take it very personally, as a Mac fan and as former Apple shareholder) will be always remembered when I will consider buying Apple products again (but probably not iPads anyway).

I wanted to replace my iPad1, I had to replace my phone, I went with a recently released, Android phablet, large screen, fantastic product. A little big for a phone, a little small for a tablet, but it serves the perfect place right now for me.  I like my iPad1, but now at 3+ years, it has served it's purpose.  The transition with music and data from iTunes was 1 - 2 clicks, the apps I used are the same in Android, I don't see a problem transitioning between the two operating systems.  I hope to get a few more months out of my iPad1 and may return to a new iPad in the future.  I spent $800 + for my iPad 32 gig and it's paid for itself over and over. There's a guy at work, he says he hates his Win98SE computer, I said it's time to upgrade!  Nothing to lose, everything to gain.

Look, we get it, you'ree rich. Not everyone earn as much as you do. I had to practically beg and almost sold my kidneys for a fourth gen iPad after some very important apps I had stopped working on it, and I'm pretty sure that I will have to do the same thing again when Apple declares my new iPad obsolete.

And my first iPad did not pay itself over. I only got two years use out of it before those developers decided to drop support for my iPad for no good reason. As of 2013 I've lost about two dozen apps, many of which I've paid hard earned cash for. I cannot update the Youtube app on my iPad and thus am denied captioning, video quality selection, etc. Imo, that's a pretty mean thing to do to someone who paid an arm and a leg for the decvice.

I am sorry this has been so frustrating for you RAMChYLD. I thought only the first generation iPad was having difficulties with updated applications. Please make sure you've updated the SYSTEM on the iPad, and then the new application updates should work for you. As far as I know, only the FIRST GENERATION iPAD has been unable to use the updated applications.

For those of you who still have a first generation iPad and are ready to make a change, Apple will give you a credit (on other Apple products) for your iPad (mine's only worth $55 to them). But I also found (through MacWorld Magazine) that a company called Gazelle (Gazelle <email@email1.gazelle.com>) will purchase old iPads for cash.

I've sent my iPad1 (the 16 gig Wi-Fi version) to them and expect to get $80. I'm thinking of using that towards the new sleeker iPad, but have to save up for that.

Yes, I was terribly frustrated with Apple for leaving us in the lurch with the iPad 1; but I've been a Mac person since my MacPlus 30 years ago. All their products have been wonderful for me, as money-makers and just plain efficient fun. I'm not willing to change over now, and don't think this problem is enough to warrant cutting off my nose to spite my face.

@BookGuide- I wasn't clear enough, sorry. It was indeed my iPad1 giving me difficulties with updated applications. Apple may have fixed it by making it automatically download older versions of the applications if it got wiped, but then some of these older versions depend on the web to work, and will simply just refuse to function because the server side of the app has been changed to not support the older version of the apps for security/functionality/selfish reasons. Although there are still developers who actively support the original iPad, it irks me that some developers simply drop support for older OSes just because they can.

TRADE IT IN AT the company that looks like a bulls eye. can i say that? they are currently giving $200 (gift card) for any ipad. as long as its not cracked and works.

on top of that you can pick up a 16gb retina for $450 with a $40 gift card. or a 16gb mini for $299 with a $25 gift card.

This has just gotten ridiculous. I just launched the older Youtube app on the first gen iPad only to find my worst fears confirmed. It doesn't work anymore. I can't search or view videos, I can't even update to the newer version because for some idiotic reason the newer version requires iOS6 or newer (why? All I want is to just view videos). My iPad4 is charging by the bedside (thanks a lot to Apple and their ridiculously short cables) and still has some way to go before it's fully charged, and I need a tablet by my desk showing me a walk through for a game.
