Q: What about lost documents stored in iCloud through third-party apps?

I am using the iCloud folder in GoodReader in an iPad2 (and less in an iPhone4).I was working intensively in a PDF, and after several days it appeared an upward arrow in a blue circle in the file icon, meaning (I guess) that the file needed to be downloaded or something like that. I didn't give it much attention, thinking it was a sign of a routine operation, and the file could be opened and I could still work with it.  But today the file cannot be opened anymore. The message in GoodReader is that the file is downloading, but the file has dissapeared from the list of files in iCloud in Settings, iCloud, etc. And of course the file is not downloading. It simply disappeared. Who is to blame here? iCloud or Good Reader or both, or myself for trusting in this silly iCloud system? The question is if there is some way to access the files "stored" in iCloud through a third-party app like GoodReader. In iCloud.com you find only the iWork files, not the third-parties files. Where are they and how can you have a look at them and manipulate them? I think I know the answer: look at Setting,iCloud,Storage..., etcetera. Well, the file is not there. But it (or its name) is still in the folder it was within GoodReader. And it is a very important file for me, by the way. Thanks in advance.

    I have the same problem.  After reading this article, I tried to copy the files directly to my iMac.  Finder reports I have no permission to view the files, even though the file information shows me as the owner.  Most strange, since I was able to move about half the files I stored in iCloud back to GoodReader.  My guess is they have some server file permission errors that need to be corrected.  (This happens in Mac OS X occasionally, but we have the disk utility to fix them.)  Not sure how to proceed; may try Apple Support, tomorrow.

    I would like to know what Apple Support tells you... I tried it myself, and after a couple of hours talking with different representatives of different support sections, I succeeded in having them recognize that even if they had the ability to manage the iCloud folders where the lost file should have been, and even if they had the tools to find out what happened with the file, they simply would not respond for a file put in iCloud by a third party app, just because it was not an Apple app. So, even if Apple gives to non-Apple apps the facility to use iCloud, and in this way effectively encourages the use of iCloud, it washes its hands in a situation where it is not the only player. It is as if the manufacturer X of radios for cars would not take responsibility for their defective radios in cases in which they were not used in X cars, even if they promote their use in any brand of car, and even if the failure can be evidently traced to the radio itself, not to the car! I find this an ackward and unfair Apple politics, to say the least. So, one of the first computer and software companies in the world, the proud and gigantic Apple, not some repair shop in some corner, forces their surely capable technicians to surrender voluntarily without presenting any battle, without doing any effort to recover a file that perhaps could be lying there somehow in front of them. This is not only a disrespect for their iCloud users, it is also a disrespect for their own technicians. Of course, I never recovered my lost file.

    My unresponded to issue under "iCloud's mail page doesn't display .Mac & .Me mail that Thunderbird captures" just might also have a bearing on your problem as well. It is disturbing to me that the new Apple hasn't responded to my problem like the "old" crew only a few years ago would've.

    I recently discovered after weeks of experiments and combing my iCloud trash and junk folders that if your Thunderbird Server settings is set for imap.mail.me.com or imap.mail.mac.com instead of imap.mail.icloud.com that iCloud will let Thunderbird get your mail but that same mail  won't be listed or logged on your online iCloud mail display at all and visa versa! So the only copies of mail I have from senders to my computer with Thunderbird Server set on imap.mail.me.com or imap.mail.mac.com resides on one computer's Thunderbird mail folder instead of also in my iCloud mail folder. Thank God I never purged my Thunderbird folders!

     

    Now that I solved that mystery I have to find a way to copy that one-of-kind imap.mail.me/mac.com mail on one Thunderbird into Thunderbirds on other machines but that's a different issue. I'd like to know whether all that imap.mail.mac/me.com mail still resides on those Apple servers and can be retrieved or at least archived to me. This misdirected server  oversight issue must be rare or unknown to Apple because I received no alerts regarding this as a previous .Mac/.Me user for the iCloud conversion or since. I think it would be prudent for all .Mac users to review their Mail app's folders and their online iCloud one. I am going to keep Thunderbird in imap.mail.me.com and imap.mail.mac.com Server settings since at least the mail reaches me as before but still can't be plucked from iCloud in Thunderbird's imap.mail.icloud.com Server settings mode.
