The update is stable for me on 10.6 and 10.7.

Russ thanks for the info. I have two iMacs and it crashes on both. Are you running 10.7.4 with all updates?
Yes. 10.7.4 and 10.6.8…preserved my clusters as well (always expecting the worst). Do you have FCPX and/or Motion and, if you do, did those updates break anything?
Russ
Also, do you have legacy Final Cut on your systems? (Looking for potential conflicts.)
Yes I have FCP X and Motion installed. They launch.
It's something on my user log in. If I log in as some ome else, it works.
Fixed. User_Library_Application Support_Apple Qmaster
Removed the Apple Qmaster folder.
Uninstalling 3ivx solved this problem for me (removing the 3ivx component from: /Library/Quicktime). Apparently, there are compatibility issues with 3ivx and Lion.

You little BEAUTY!
Grateful thanks,
Andrew.
Thanks jpwatson, this fixed it for me!
Another grateful thanks - the 3ivx seemed to be the problem for me too...
YES YES YES. Wow, I have been tearing my hair out trying to figure this out. I deleted my 3ivx folder AND the QT 3ivxVideoCodec.componet and viola, Compressor is back running.
Thanks all for this one...
