Q: Few Questions about iPhoto to Aperture Switch

I have been using iPhoto every since I got a mac.  I store all my photos (I am an amateur photographer so I have a lot) in iPhoto and I have iPhoto synced with my iPhone over iCloud.

iPhoto is great, but I have been dying to get to Aperture cause of its vastly greater capabilites.

Here is my dilemna.  I want to use Aperture, but not if when I move my iPhoto library over to Aperture any changes I make to the photos in Aperture won't be automatically seen in those photos in iPhoto.

And here is the bigger issue.  If I do switch over, that will take up so much MORE space on my harddrive.  Is it possible to work out of Aperture and have the files be saved automatically in iPhoto so I don't have all these duplicate files taking up twice the ammount of space that is necessary.

Lastly, and this is more of a iPhoto question, but if I have a Macbook Pro and an iMac, how do I get the two libraries to be identical.  Right now I have to manually upload the same photos or do it over the Airdrop because they are right next to each other.  They are both on the iCloud together, but if I were to make a change to a photo on the laptop, how do I get it to be already there on the iMac.

I appreciate any help in these matters, and I thank you ahead of time.

Yours truly,

Brendan

I have been fighting a battle to get all my images across many drives and computers into one set of files, without any duplicates.  Now that I have them out of Aperture and iPhoto, I have a single folder with about 14,000 JPG images in it, with no duplicates remaining.  I hate the lack of control I have if I drag these into iPhoto or Aperture, since they get strewn through thousands of folders.  My intent is to keep the master images in this one folder, and never do that to myself again.

What do you think about the following process?

    1) Put my photos on a shared network drive, using my single folder of 14,000 JPG photos

    2) Set up a iPhoto / Aperture library on that shared drive, leaving the master files out of the Libary.  I iPhoto / Aperture will pull in a 'version' every time I edit a photo, but the number of images that puts into the library will be minimal.

    3) I make sure no one else in my family gets into either the Aperture or iPhoto libraries while I am in there, and I always make sure iPhoto and Aperture are closed when I leave either computer.

    4) If I muck around in iPhoto or Aperture from a single computer at a time (either my work or personal one), they will both have access to the same library and the requirement for synching goes away.  That in mind, I still have to back up my data, since it is on that one network drive, but I have a good handle on how to do that. Additionally, if I want to have access to photos while away from home, I can always do one of the following:

    a) copy the files I want to a temporary library on my computer

    b) have my home disk back up to the cloud, so I can get to all my pictures and the libary file from anywhere I am with an internet connection.

I would love to get feedback from several of you on this strategy before I implement it.

You can't put an iPhoto or Aperture Library on a NAS.

For the reason that you cannot use a NAS with your Aperture Library see here:

    Allen,

Confused now. I agreed with your initial post that described functionality has nothing to do with syncing two libraries across two computers.

Then, you are now describing it as a viable two-computer almost-sync methodology.

Can you please elaborate. I would really love to sync my iphoto library between my imac and macbook., but no idea how to get it done without huge manual labor. Also, my iphoto library is huge and I cannot risk to make any mistakes along the way.

Thanks in advance for your help!!!
