Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.

Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

See if this doesn't fix everything for you.

That's not good news. Your choices are:

  1. Spend $99 and buy Disk Warrior which probably can repair the drive.
  2. Backup all your files then reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

For the second option:

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch

If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.

Boot to the Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Erase the hard drive:

  1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
  2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
  3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
  4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.

I've got the exact same problem. My Mac isn't even a year old and when I installed the update I can't access the system. I also get: "unable to find driver for this platform."

Can't believe an update can cause so much damage.

I tried rebooting with the Lion disk and holding down C but it makes no difference. I'm worried that I will lose data on the drive which is absolutely critical to me if I try and repair the drive.

Ok, I've got disk utility up but I don't know what the DU area is. I can't see anything listing that or with S.M.A.R.T, could you tell me what I could be doing wrong.

At the top of the list I have the drive listed as 1TB ST3 xxxxxxx

Then beneath that I have the Drive Macintosh HD.

I clicked on both the Drives above and hit verify disk but it says everything is okay. I don't have an option to "Verify permissions" for anything other than Drive Macintosh.

What should I do next?

I've just run verify permissions and I'm getting this:

Group differs on "Library/ColorSync"; should be 0; group is 80.

Permissions differ on "Library/ColorSync"; should be drwxr-xr-x; they are drwxrwxr-x.

I'm getting 100s of lines of this on all sorts of Library and System/Library directories.

I'm running disk repair against the named hard drive now to see what happens.

You will have to reinstall Lion. Apple didn't cause the problem. There were already problems with your system that were simply aggravated by the updates. I suggest that in the future you always repair the hard drive and permissions BEFORE downloading and installing new updates.
