Yeah, you said "not Skype but audio in," so I addressed the audio in part of the issue and not Skype.

No worries, I have now resolved my problem by getting a $30 sound card add on thingy, the Behringer U-Control UCA202 - USB 1.1 (similar to this 222, only color and some software the difference)

I now plug my PS3 multiplug phono into this thingy, plug this in my retina MBP, use a small program called LineIn to pass thru the sound to my gaming headset along with Skype. BAM! Works like... ehh... my old MBP without this device!

I guess it's too late now but the " iRig " is what you were looking for!

I guess the iRig could work, but my solution with the Behringer external sound card is working like a charm 🙂

(that smiley is not retina optimized, but I digress...)

Ok dudes seriously.

1. No pro or even hobby wannabe would ever use the built in audio jack to record serious audio. An audio pro will ALWAYS use a higher khz and 32bit plus solution anything else is just crap. That jack is virtually useless!

Or please tell me what are you doing with it? (don't post any adult stuff please)

You can't even use it with skype headphones mostly since the signal will be to low.

2. Anyone buying a retina mac and only produces audio on it is a show off. (to not say idiot). you only "need" it for photo editing... and maybe 4k Video (google it).

If anyone (like me) does audio and video (no 4k yet) just wants the retina feature and the performance etc...... then stop whining and get a serious audio-interface....

3) Apple is in general ******* pros of ESPECIALLY video guys with all the icrap, the non continuing Final Cut Studio and replacing it with iMovieFInalcutX, dropping serious servers (no way same i/o on a mini rofl), not doing anything with logic, the Mac Pro is virtually dead ETC ETC ETC.

The jack isn't particularly essential for anybody or anything, but there are situations where it's **** practical to just have it there.

Anyone who buys a MacBook Pro w/ retina display just to produce audio is perhaps fond of running the thing at a higher screen resolution than was previously possible. Logic Pro at 1920 on a 15" or 1680 on a 13" MacBook is a pretty big gain over the "standard" resolution (though this applies only when you're not in the studio, of course -- external monitors there).

I'll be buying one for audio when my next purchase is due. I'm also looking forward to the weight savings, as I lug this thing around at least three days a week, and often more.

lol 😝 what was I smoking that day... sorry I meant 24bit/44100Khz or I need a lot of 48KHz recordings for videography... the Standard input is 16 bit on the MacBooks who have tem left...

If you want to record serious audio it would be "essential" in the litteral sence, but yeah I agree it is nice to have to just record something on the fly, of course...

I'm actually just working on a small project in Logic Pro 9 away from my homestudio, arranging some music under a little film project, to be honest I cant see any difference to my previous Mac Book Pro 15" in Logics UI, sure its theoretically better in resolution numbers but it's probably not a sales arguement to a musician/audio producer etc., I always work on my 1920x1080 external cheap monitor beacuase of the larger perception of the UI (larger not higher resoluted...) but better to fiddle with.... as always with a bigger screen....

Even in final cut pro I work on the external one (also), but I always have the to be viewed footage on the Retina display. (be it previewing or final output)

The weight / slimness is a huge plus absolutely, so light yet a little supercomputer... 🙂

The downside is the RAM is fixed to the mainboard as are other components (like the audio out) if somethings damaged or you want to upgrade from 8 to 16 GB - you can't (or get a new motherboard), that is better in the other designs not retina... but hey it's quite agnostic the whole thing so go for what you want/need/can afford etc...

That is the whole reason this thread exists.

So this means that Apple has given out the message that "Use the MBPS" seriously.... If you want to use it for Sound engineering, get a real A to D converter ie Sound Card and here we give you the speediest input ports viz. The Thunderbolt and The USB3.... Whatever sampling speed you have.... These ports can just take in the signal as you want... Then view the waveform on the retina display... Zoom it and play with the wave at this incredible resolution... Using the Apple softwares like Garage band and next level - the Logic Pro... No low quality sound input allowed!

More or less, yes. I have read many an audio forum and believe me there are countless threads about why not to ever use any internal audio port for recording more or less serious audio... (interference hiss sounds beside the lower bit quality etc. etc. etc.)

The Cnet tip might work on a 13" but here on my 15" Retina that option is not available.. unfort.

Regarding resolutions:

I'm not surehow it works when I'm not in scaled mode (and I'm mostly in "Optimized for retina display mode").

It does not switch automatically to a higher resolution (hence make everything smaller) so do I even have the better resoltuion even in full screen mode in "Optimized for retina display" mode? Not sure...

I got this little plugin that lets you switch manually to full screen retina mode (2880 × 1800 ) and who-ooo you can switch into even unknown amazing resoltuions (3840 x 2400), so large you can bearly see the mouspointer, the dock or any folders / menu options any more it's crazy!!

You talk like the tipical amateur that doesn't have any idea about what is talking about... First, just read that he wants for skype so the line input is more than enough... And about the 24 bits/44.1 Khz... Do you know it's more important have more Khz of resolution than the bits in the audio files?

You shouldn't talk like that if you aren't a real professional... And do some projects with your camera in your home studio it's not...

I don't want to be rude, but people without knowledge that read your post will have a completely wrong advice about the professional sound...
