If I'm not mistaken I'm sure you'll be able to buy an input/output y-split cable for the headphone/mic jack.

I'm an audio engineer as well, but I will take advantage of my external soundcard via Thunderbolt! IF you're serious about engineering, you'll have an external sound card and will know how much noise and distortion lies on the internal circuitry. I only use the internal soundcard if I don't have any external devices and I have to use skype etc.

I would suggest an Apogee One or suchlike if you want superior sound output!

But kayfromhomberg is saying that choice is actually being taken away. I agree with kay and was very dissapointed with this as well. I use an external usb audio interface for recording, but it can be very finicky and unreliable, so for quick demos into Garageband, I always prefer to just record right into the audio input of my mac. I was willing to accept the loss of an internal optical drive but I never would have dreamed they would take away the audio input. It all ends up being way too much compromise for the high price tag.

hi guys,

I'm also very disappointed to don't see the audio in port anymore.....

It's true you can buy external harware for audio recording, and it will be better, and it will be more clear etc etc.

But on a 3000US$ laptop for professionals, you **** want it build in your machine, and not be forced to carry around other external devices. Than if you want the excellence and the pure and perfect recording it's up to you deciding to invest and use external devices.

I am not a sound engineer but need audio input, so can someone with sound engineering background confirm the audio jack is both in/out and this is suitable for audio input, I usually record seperate audio for filming and use my Sennheiser wireless transmitter to inpur mic into laptop. Is this sufficient of should I look into getting a usb adapter/soundcard? if so can you recomend one thats good quality and affordable (no more than $150)

I am sorry to say DJ JoeE, you are a bit wrong on the capabilities of the sound port on the retina MBP... The out part, sure, but not what the thread starter wanted.

Although the non retina 13" MBP has only one jack port, it has line in/headphones out and spdif optical in and out - however the 15" MBP retina DOES NOT have ANY input capabilites on the jack input, only OUT (though both regular out and spdif). It may or may not have support for the Apple headphones and the mic on it, I do not know - I have only tried that with Skype and I could not make it work. If I am wrong, please teach me how to do this (not Skype but audio in).

I have tried with the cable you linked to (or a similar one I used on my 18 month old MBP) and I have tried with regular line in sound - nothing works and no pull down menu in System Preferences as my friend with the 13" has.

For me, the professional sound editor and whatnot argument is not really that valid, I want sound from my PS3 system into the Mac (run that through a small program called LineIn), and togehter with Skype out to my headphones via USB (like I have been using for a year with the old MBP). So what I need is something of a USB soundcard thingy that lets me put the PS3 sound (phono, jack or optical) into my MacBook Pro retina, anyone?

For whatever it is worth, I have used the headphones (earbuds, really) from my iPhone 4 in my Retina MBP, just as a test. It was recognized as an external microphone and allowed dictation, but I have no idea if the quality would satisfy your ear.

One would expect that an appropriate adapter could route audio input to the appropriate contacts among the four on the Apple earbud plug. Again, no guess as to the quality.

yes the computer recognizes my earbuds too (the $60 or so earbuds from Apple) - but when I tested them in Skype the person on the other end could not hear me.

However this is not what I want to do, I want the audio from my PS3 system into my MBP retina, use a small piece of software and send it out again into my gaming headset (with a mic) along with the Skype call...
