Safari has become very slow the last few days, only on a few programs - google, youtube, wikipedia. Also mail is slow to send and receive.

Whether you are running Mac OS X 10.6.2 or 10.6.3 your system software is completely outdated.

Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click Software Update.

Your Mac OS X needs to be at v10.6.8 / Safari should be 5.1.7

And make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk to install software updates.

Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop.

Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

Select  ▹ System Preferences ▹ Network ▹ Advanced ▹ TCP/IP ▹ Configure IPv6: Off. Apply the change and test. You must apply the change before it takes effect.

strange, off is not an option for me. Just Automatically, Manually, Local-link only. IPV4 has an off. 0_o

in anticipation of the new macbook pro, I'm trying safari out, but as usual its completely unusable.

on the command line:

networksetup -setv6off Ethernet

networksetup -setv6off Wi-Fi

also does the trick, if you don't have it in the gui.

It took a reset of safari (delete all data) to get gmail working. I can't imagine sticking around in safari for very long.

Thank you! Your solution solved my problem too. There were only a couple sites that I was able to visit and it was really frustrating. Like Steve P., I don't know what that did, but it worked and hopefully I won't have to change it back to "automatic" if it means Safari will stutter and come to a halt.

Wow! Linc Davis's solution (Configure IPv6: Off) worked for me, too! My Safari had become very slow and unable to load some pages, even though Chrome and Firefox had no problems. I tried everything -- resetting, emptying cache, trashing Safari library files, new DNS, disabling prefetching, etc. etc. -- and lost some hair in the process. Nothing worked. I was about to give up on Safari when I stumbled onto this thread. Thank you, Mr. Davis.

However, having used Chrome while I was trying to solve my Safari problem, I am now a convert to Chrome. It is faster and very stable, and has no problems with Flash. I think Apple needs to put a little more development effort into Safari...

I did this but I still cant download my emails. I have restarted the computer as well 😟

I am having the same issue where Safari slows down or freezes,until I restart it.On my system which is running on Mt.Lion I don't see the 'off' option on IPV6.There is only automatic,manual or Link local in the drop down menu .
