itunes on External drive issues

I put my itunes medai on an external 500 GB maxtor drive a year or so ago and it currently has 387Gb used with 112 free but it has started to have the odd hiccup so I have purchase anew 1Tb Hitachi drive which I used Carbon copy cloner to make an image of.

I have changed the media location in advanced preferences and have the keep organised and copy files both ticked. However it wouldnt see the new cloned drive. When i moved back again it indexed the songs ect on the maxtor ( missed a few so got about 60 ! marks) This didn't happen when I switched to the 1TB Hitachi. Any ideas/suggestions please?

I suspect you're not going about it the right way.

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

Thanks Limnos but for some reason it doesnt want to know.

I consolidated my I tunes library

I have copied my itunes folder from my Maxtor to my Hitachi

I have changed the setting in my itunes location to /Hiatchi/itunes. However when I look back at the get info on a track it still says /maxtor/itunes. The unes will play but if i remove the drive then i get a "Not found" error.

If i then change back to maxtor/itunes. I get a different update going through all the track listings which I didnt when I tried to get it to point to the Hitachi.

I tried this several times going through the guide line by line but to no avail. Any ideas?

You do not touch anything in iTunes preferences. You direct iTunes to the new library location by holding down the option key while starting iTunes.

Hi Thanks Limnos for your help and patience I tried than and got

An iTunes library file could not be found in the folder “itunes Media ”. Please choose a different folder.

I copied my itunes folder from the Maxtor to the Hitachi. I cant see any differences between what is on either drive :-(

Thank you for your advice. It worked perfectly and saved me hours. I found the answer from browsing the apple pages. No-one I knew had an answer. Thanks once again.
