Just updated iMovie today. What happened to the Ripple transitions?
iMovie '11, Mac OS X (10.7.4)
Same thing with me. My ripple transition is gone. Also, any existing ripple transitions in my existing projects do not play properly.
After updating to 9.0.6 I have the same issue - no Ripple transition. Also, as you have noted, any existing Ripple transitions in projects do not play. All I see is a black screen as the playhead moves over the transition.
Double-clicking the transition opens the Inspector, which shows the transition as a Cross Dissolve. However, the Cross Dissolve does not show up on playback. I haven't tested replacing the transition as yet, as iMovie has just unexpectedly quit on me! I'll report back if I have any success in replacing the transition once I have iMovie up and running again.

Further to my last post, in one of my Projects I've successfully replaced an original Ripple transition (which no longer works) with a Cross Blur. I also tested a Cross Dissolve, which also worked fine.
Not sure what has happened here. Has Apple deliberately removed the Ripple transition, or is it simply a hiccup?

I had the same experience. I changed it to cross dissolve and others without a problem. I can't find ripple ANYWHERE anymore.
I went to my backup and found the iMovie app. Right clicked to show Contents. Under Resources was a Transition_Ripple2.qtz file and a transition-ripple.tiff file. Copied the Transition_Ripple2.qtz file and the tiff file came along with it to the current iMovie app. location. Opened iMovie -- didn't work. Restarted the computer opened iMovie -- still didn't work.
I had the same problem. After about and hour with Apple care and several different people, I was told Apple eliminated the Ripple transition as part of the 9.0.6 update. It's gone...no way to get it back in 9.0.6. I was just finishing a project that used a bunch of this transition, so I found a work around. I used Time Machine to revert back to the old version of iMovie (9.0.4). When asked if I wanted to replace or keep both files, I elected to keep both files. I now have a version of iMovie called iMovie (Original). That still has the Ripple effect. Seems to be working fine also. I can't image why Apple did this. I left feedback in the feedback forum. Recommend we all do it so they will place the Ripple back. This is the first time I've really used iMovie for a big project. I've discovered I'm probably better off with something like Final Cut or Adobe Elements. That's what I know. Hope it helps.
Thanks, scottfromfpo, for you research and post. Can't say I like the answer much. Ripple was one of the nicest transitions and one I used a lot. Your advice about providing feedback is well taken. I hope they'll listen and reconsider.
Why on earth would they do this? I can't really afford to splash out £200 on Final Cut, so I need all the stuff I can get in iMovie, yet it is certainly lacking some basic features and removing things doesn't help either!
Seriously! And I agree! Why did they do this? Like what discussion happened at Apple to decide whether they keep a highly used transition or not. "Well guys, our data shows that iMovie editors use this Ripple transition a lot. Like 96% out of all the transitions. So, based on that data,... let's scrap it in the next update. Seems like the logical thing to do." I'm actually pretty cheesed off about this. I use the ripple for a lot of the closings in my memory montage videos. There better be either a lawsuit against them for the Ripple transition or they better be remaking it with extra ripples! Anything else is unexcusable APPLE!!!!!
The Ripple Transition is still in iMovie's Package Contents folder, but doesn't appear in the Transitions Browser within the iMovie app. So it may just be a hiccup, not a deliberate omission on Apple's part.
To see the listed transition, control-click (or right-click) on iMovie.app in your Applications folder then click on Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu. In Contents/Resources you will find the item "Transition_Ripple2.qtz" and also "transition-ripple.tiff". So it appears that the Ripple Transition is intact but simply not showing up when using iMovie. Hopefully it's just a temporary glitch due to the recent 9.0.6 upgrade to iMovie to make it compatible with the new Retina Display MacBook Pro models.

Hard to know for sure, but I spent several hours talking to Apple Care reps (and trying to reload the transition that as you point out is still there) only to be told by one of the senior tech reps that the transition had been removed with the most recent update. Their input to me was to use the feedback system if I wanted to try and get it back. It didn't sound like a glitch, unfortunately. I'd recommend using the feedback forum to provide input...maybe we can get it back it enough people complain.

I've updated to iMovie version 9.0.7 and Mountain Lion. Unfortunately the Ripple transition is still missing from the Transitions Browser.

Very disappointed Apple! Please add the best transition iMovie had back as soon as possible.
