One way is to purchase the iBooks app and then put the PDF in your Books library and sync to the iPad. There are also other apps that support PDFs.

You can email them to yourself. If you have iBooks on the iPad - you can drag the pdfs into the books library of iTunes and then sync your iPad or you can use a file sharing app like Adobe Reader or Good Reader. This explains how to use file sharing.

You can also use DropBox - to move files from your computer to the iPad - but you need the app on your computer and on the iPad - both apps are free.
