Formula to count data variations?

Is there anyway to build a formula that tells me how many data variations occur in a column?

Ex

A1-A5 is "mom"; A5-A7 is "dad"; A8-A13 is "kids"; A15-A29 is "self"

The answer would be "4" because there are 4 data variations (mom, dad, kids, self).

I'm dealing with many variations over a very large data set (specifically different dates over a 2 month period). I tried the "count" formula but the explanation given within numbers wasn't adaquate for a formula newbie like me.
