With iMovie closed, trash iMovie's preference file. Note that, when next opened, iMovie will create a fresh file with the default settings. You can change these if desired (in iMovie's menu select iMovie>Preferences and make your changes under each of the tabs).
The preference file is located in your User (Home) folder Library/Preferences. It is named "com.apple.iMoveApp.plist". In Lion, to access your User/Library folder, hold down the Option key and click on Go in the Finder menu. The Library folder will appear in the drop down list. Lion has hidden the Home Library folder, but in earlier versions of Mac OS X it was available like all other folders.
Dragging the preference file to the Trash will not harm your Events or Projects, but may fix the problem of iMovie crashing at start-up. After installing the 9.0.6 update iMovie worked fine for me, with no need to trash the preference file.
TIP: Don't empty the Trash until you are satisfied that iMovie has started up correctly, and is working OK, after deleting the preference file. If iMovie still does not start up, drag the preference file back to its original location in the User/Library/Preferences folder.
John
thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately i just tried this with no success.
I am having the same problem after the recent update. When we start iMovie, it goes through the process of "Optimizing Movies", then the Event Library populates with the event list and about a second later iMovie crashes and the crash report window comes up.
I also tried deleting the preference file but it didn't help.
I am having the same problem after updating iMovie today. I noticed that the update was over a GB
I can't do my work without iMovie. This is really agrivating.
All of my events and projects are on external hard drives and so they are safe. Can I used time machine and revert back to the version of iMovie 11 prior to the update?
HELP.
I tried going back to June 6 but it did help. iMovie still crashes the way you described earlier.
CORRECTION ---- A RESTORED VERSION OF iMOVIE 11 WORKS! RESTORE WITH TIME MACHINE.
I didn't do the restoration correctly before. I haven't used Time Machine to restore much.
Note: I did a full backup to save any recent files before I did any of the Time Machine restorations.
I opened Time Machine again and went to the applications folder and found a pre-updated version of iMovie 11. The earlier version I had was from July 2011. I restored that and it asked me if I wanted to replace the recent updated one or keep both. I kept both. The older version is now called iMovie original.
I am using the iMovie original (July 2011) with my current projects and events on my external drives and so far so good.
I hope this helps someone out there!
Use Time Machine to restore to a pre-updated version of iMovie 11. see the full details in my other posts.
i have been working on this all day with applecare. we even uninstalled imovie and reinstalled. didnt work. i am waiting again for a call back. if only i had time machine on it may have been a problem solver but i havent had the computer long and never got to that. learned my lesson. however i am still working on getting imovie working again !!!
My update is that I have not been successful with any of the options suggested. I tried removing the preference files and nothing changed. I tried downloading the update a second time directly from the Apple Support site and the application still crashes after some of the events are loaded. Never fully loads to be able to use before it crashes and gives me the crash report. I called Applecare support and she had me create a new user account to test the application without any projects/events to upload and the application still crashed so she concluded that the problem was with the application and not the update or the computer. She said I would need to reinstall the software from the original CD and then do the incremental updates for each version since then. Unfortunately I am on vacation and don't have my install CD or my Time Machine backup so I can't reinstall the software or even revert to an earlier version. I was hoping I could download an earlier version from Apple Support but it wouldn't let me install it because it said I had a newer version and didn't need it. Extremely frustrating!!! Wish I hadn't tried to update it on vacation so now I can't download any of my vacation videos until I get back home. Would love to hear a success story from someone in the forum who found a solution without reverting to an earlier version of iMovie or needing the original CD. :-)
i dont have a cd... when i bought the laptop it didnt come with one. we tried the same things you did. im waiting for a call back again from applecare. and.. because its relatively new i hadnt backed up on an external harddrive and not on time machine...so i was stupid there. im frustrated and very sick of the hours i have spent. so still no success story here yet.
any success yet?
ok...I have had success.....sort of. After hours of off and on discussion with applecare I now have imovie working again. All iphoto movies are back in the event folder. However my projects are in a folder in Finder...not in imovie and i have know idea how to get them back into imovie. i think this might be a problem but i will talk to my new friend at apple care (after hours and many phone calls I've earned the right to call him friend) tomorrow morning and see if we can resolve this issue.
The imovie issue had to do with quicktime. I had to go into finder library and open the quicktime folder. I then removed all the icons EXCEPT....AppleintermediateCodec.component and AppleMPEG2Codec.componet and put them in the trash. iMovie stopped crashing afer this. Keep in mind though that throughout the day i uninstalled and reinstalled imovie from the app store and that didnt work. and i also reinstalled the operating system. when this was complete i had to update the operating system so i could open imovie and iphoto.... that didnt solve the imovie issue until i did the quicktime thing. all these uninstalls and reinstalls took hours. Do I recommend this??...well... it took guts on my part as im an idiot when it comes to doing things like that. i havent emptied my trash yet as i want to be sure things are working well before i do.
remember...DO NOT REMOVE the AppleintermediateCodec.component and AppleMPEG2Codec.component.... in Quicktime just the others. You need these two folders to run iMovie. when in doubt ask the applecare support.
I'm having the same issue.. Anyone know if Apple are working on this problem?
