Macbook memory probs

My early 2008 Macbook has a failed memory slot. An Apple Store Genius told me I can put 2GB of memory in one of the slots and leave the other slot empty. Will that work?

The Apple Genius also indicated the machine should work with just a single 1GB memory in a functional slot. Machine won't boot--just get the spinning daisy or whatever you call it.
