i downloaded my iphone contacts to itunes but i can't locate the contacts

I downloaded by iphone contacts to itunes on my mac os computer, so I can edit the contacts. I cant find contacts on computer to edit but I know they're synced. please help

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1.1

How exactly, did you do this? I ask because contacts are NOT stored in iTunes. iTunes acts as a conduit to sync them with a compatible address book on your computer.

What did you tell it to sync them with?
