To start Mac Pro 4.1 need to unplug, reset motherboard. Why

If I shut down the Mac Pro G5 4.1, then in order to get it to start I have to unplug it, remove the cover, reset the motherboard switches. Then it will start. If I just press the switch on the front, nothing happens. How can I fix it?

4x2.93 MHz, 8 GB ram, OS 10.6.8

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 4.1

The 1,1 and 2,1 had a Reset SMC button on motherboard - above PCI #4 and below or behind drive bay #4 (have to remove both items if present) to access. Not iin 4,1 2009s.

For those unplug, remove cables, hit power button for 8 seconds, release. Plug it in and hit power button.

the old method of unplug for 10 minutes never worked, sometimes if you let it sit overnight. And the first motherboards were built and designed back in mid-2005. And a reset button was needed.

Thanks for your replies, but I am still perplexed.

"For those unplug, remove cables, hit power button for 8 seconds, release. Plug it in and hit power button. " did not work. I then unplugged, pressed the white button on the logic board next to the battery, plugged back in and hit the power button and it works. ??

What does the white button next to the battery do?
