Hi, I just upgraded Aperture and now the search function doesn't work completely. It will work with one field, but when I enter another field to narrow the search nothing comes up, when I know there are photos that should appear. How do I reset this?

What specific Rules are you using? With what parameters? On what container?
A screenshot of the Filter HUD would be very helpful.
Same as I always have before the latest update. I mostly use the IPTC search and enter a few words to come up with the photo I want. In this example it will search one, but not both or more. (And yes, I check the IPTC on the left, though I know it isn't in this image)

Let's try to rule in or rule out the IPTC Caption field.
Does the Filter work as expected with multiple Rules selected?
Does the Filter work as expected with multiple versions of the same Rule selected?
In each case using Rules other than IPTC.
The next step would be to test the IPTC Rule with other fields, i.e.: not "Caption".
It works with one IPTC and one text search field and rating. It does not work with one IPTC, text, flagged and rating. So it's when combinations happen that there are issues, but shouldn't be. I use the search often. It's the main way to find one photo among thousands. I'm sure you understand that. Is there a way to reset the search, kind of like reindexing one's Mac?
When you say "Nothing comes up" is that after the little spinning gear has gone round and "loading" has flashed on the bottom border of the Browser?

The proper way is to repair or rebuild your Library. Before you do that, though, see if rebooting doesn't bring everything back.
Yes, Aperture is done spinning and searching. I did a repair permissions for Aperture and that didn't help. If I rebuild am I going to lose anything? I have so many notes and captions. I will reboot again. It didn't work before, but one never knows. Thanks.
In the photo you included the check box next to the search criteria is not checked. Is that by accident? My bad hanging my head low.

Between "Repair Permissions" and "Rebuilt Library" is "Repair Library". Make a back-up, and repair your Library.
I oversee about a dozen Libraries (some quite large and complex) and as part of my regular maintenance repair them, and have also rebuilt them as needed. I have _never_ had a Library damaged by any of the three repair actions. I don't advise throwing caution to the wind (back up, back up, and back up again), but nothing in my experience has made me wary of using those tools.
Ok. I have all my photos relocated to an external terabyte drive. I have that library backed up another external drive that is only plugged in when I am updating it. I also have my Mac backed up on Time Machine. That's good enough, right? Or is there another way I should back up? Thank you.
And should I have my external drive plugged in when I do the repair? Odd thing, is that when the drive is plugged in I can't open Aperture. The wheel will spin and spin and I have to force it to quit. So, I have to open Aperture first and then plug in and turn on the external drive where the photos are relocated. I say this because do I have to open the repair window and then before starting turn on the external? Thanks
You are repairing just the LIbrary. Referenced Originals are not in the Library, and don't need to be on-line when the Library is repaired.
You run "Repair" with Aperture closed. It will open automatically when the repair is finished.
That you have to regularly force quit Aperture is symptomatic of something wrong. See if the repair fixes this problem. You may have to run "Rebuild" as well.
You should have back-ups of each of your Libraries and all of your Referenced Originals. Two full sets, with one set kept off-site, are recommended.
There are too many combinations and ways of backing up to provide specifics, but the general rule holds: back up your Library and back up all of Referenced Originals.
So if your Library is on your system drive, and you have Referenced Originals on MyExternalDrive1, then you need to have a backup of your system drive (Time Machine does this by default, when enabled), and a backup of the files on MyExternalDrive1.
From your description it sounds as though you have two backups of your Library (via Time Machine to a dedicated disk, and "backed up to another external drive that is only plugged in ... ", and no backup of your Referenced Originals.
Ok, I think I'm good with the back ups. I have Time Machine, which really is for everything other than the photos... I only have the thumbnails/previews on my laptop. All the referenced originals are on an external terabyte which I plug in when using Aperture and then I have another external that is a copy of what is one the terabyte. So, two back ups as you recommend. Thanks.
