I changed my apple id online, but it did not change on my phone. Is it supposed to change automatically?

I changed my apple id online (I got a new email address), but the old one still shows up on my iphone. Each time I try to log in with my password, it won't let me. I keep changing the password, but each time it still gives me the "password is invalid" message. My thought is: it is because it is still showing my original apple id and not the new one.

When I go to apple id on the web page it tells me my apple id is my new email address, so I know it took. Shouldn't it change on my iphone automatically? Can anyone help?

@Maccrap1,

When you say you "created your own apple ID" it implies that you orignally were using another Apple ID. If you still have apps installed on your iPhone that were downloaded using the old ID you will be asked for the old ID and password when downloading an update. An option is to delete all apps that were downloaded using the old ID.
