Backup error: itunes could not back up the iphone "iphone" because an error occurred

Every since the last IOS update I keep getting this error. I tried several POC and phone resets and restarts. I tried removing the old backups and then reseting some more but I keep getting this error.

"itunes could not back up the iphone "iphone" because an error occurred"

I searched online and I cna't find any solutions that work. Is this Apples way of trying to force you to use iCloud or is there another way to restore my phone without using the restore function and losing my data?

Thanks,

iPhone 4S, Windows 7

I had the same error and just fixed it.

I'd moved the backup files to an external drive then deleted them from the library, but even without old backups, the process failed.

I tried many of the suggestions I found in other threads, but it still wouldn't work.

Eventually I tried unchecking the "Encrypt iPhone Backup" My previous backups were encrypted with a password, so when I unchecked the box, I was prompted for that password, which let me remove the encryption.

I then rechecked the box, entered in a "new" password, but I used the same one as before. The back up ran and showed progress in a pop-up window. A few minutes later, it was done.

I've since tested it through the normal process and everything is working again.

Hope this helps.

That didn't work either.

I did a complete restore. Spent days reorganizing my phone, made 1 backup and now I get the same error message, "cannot backup iPhone because an error occured" I give up. It's not fixable.. I guess I just have to hope that I never need to restore because all I have is that one backup.

I have tried 3 differnet Macs, three different cables.. same error so it MUST be the iphone 4S. I also have the latest iOS 6.1.3 and iTunes 11.0.2

What is wrong with Apple these days??? What happened to "it just works"??

Having the same problem, 4S iphone, iOS 6.1.3, itunes 11.0.2, unable to back up. "itunes could not back up the iphone "iphone" because an error occurred". No error code. Happens on two separate computers, one desktop, one laptop windows xp, everything up to date. Backed up two months ago, don;t want to lose everything I've done/added since then. Spent many hours trying everything suggested above, on other internet sources and on apple troubleshooting page with no luck. phone is NOT jailbroken or unlocked etc.

No jailbreak on mine either. Factory standard iPhone. Not even the Apple store Genius Bar could get my iPhone to back up via iTunes, not even from their Macs.. They had no idea what else to do but showed me how to backup from the iphone to iCloud:

To back up your iphone once you get the iTunes error:

Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Back Up Now

It works for me, it will take awhile the first time but then it only takes about a minute on subsequent backups.
