Java 10.6.1_33

Since installing Java 10.6.1_33, an online program I use will not function. The program says I do not have the correct Java update. Apple says to re-enable Java applets by clicking the region labeled "Inactive plug-in" on a webpage, but there is no region labeled "inactive plug-in". Everything worked perfectly before installing the latest update which was released yesterday.

I'd like to know what happens to a web plug-in that's been deactivated after a certain period of time

Nothing, if Java and the Java Plugin are enabled in your browser, Java applets will not work. This is controlled by a new preference key- WebComponentsEnabled in your ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.java.JavaPreferences.<machine UUID>.plist along with the WebComponentsLastUsed preference key. This preference sets the JAVA_HOME environmental variable for GUI apps.

How does it get reactivated if needed?

You can reactivate it with the Java Preferences.app or within your browser. With Firefox I had to quit the application then open it again.

I'm confused because WZZZ's illustration shows all boxes at Java Preferences un-checked. After installing Update 9, I find the two boxes checked, & they remain so if "Restore Defaults" and whether or not enable Java in Safari & Firefox. If I leave these two boxes checked & leave Java enabled in browsers, will Java aplet rejection function automatically as HT 5268 describes, i.e. run only if click on a webpage's "inactive plug-in" notice (or the new enable box in Java Preferences) and after a while deactivate?

Or, to obtain such automatic rejection function should I uncheck the two boxes? Or do I have to disable each browser's Java plug-in to get this function?

Before updating, I had already manually unchecked the two boxes for versions next to the CPU-Type. (I normally keep Java disabled both in the browser and in Java Preferences.) After the update, the third, circled box, which newly appeared was unchecked, presumably because the two main boxes were already unchecked. My understanding is that if you leave all three boxes checked and you do not run an applet for a period of time (unspecified by Apple) only the third "Enable applet plug-in...." box will automatically become unchecked.

Yes, that's my understanding, altlhough I haven't tried this yet. If you want to control Java only at the browser, then leave all 3 boxes checked.

This update configures web browsers to not automatically run Java applets. Java applets may be re-enabled by clicking the region labeled "Inactive plug-in" on a web page. If no applets have been run for an extended period of time, the Java web plug-in will deactivate.

How did you find out you needed an update adn what was it? Java wont run in Safari or Chrome on my Mountain on machine, but it is notionally enabled in Safari. I can find no reference to a Java Preferences app anywhere. When I do a Java - version in terminal i shows me this:

java version "1.6.0_37"

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_37-b06-434-11M3909)

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.12-b01-434, mixed mode)

I can compile java programs no problem with javac

I have also checked sofwtare update and nothing shows there. I now hav mountain lion having updated to it from Snow Leopard. I think it was after the udpate it went wrong, but t may have been later, perhaps after the last Java update.

cheers

Yesterday Java was working fine. Today I get a message saying "inactive plugin" I click on that message and it checks for new software. It finds the latest version of Java 1.6, and I downloaded it. I still get the "inactive plugin" message - nothing has changed. I have checked that the Java and plugins are enabled in Safari, and have checked that they are all ticked/enabled in Java Preferences in Utilities. Everything seems to be in place and enabled everywhere I can think of but I still just get the "inactive plugin" message that takes me to Check for Software Updates. Any ideas?
