how to clean keyboard

My iMac USB extended keyboard is really dirty. I had heard of running it through a cycle on the top shelf of the dishwasher. This sounds crazy to me but has anyone ever tried this and got a clean and still useable keyboard? If that's not the answer, then how can I clean it? Thanks.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

I really wouldn't do that unless you want a new keyboard.

Use a soft cloth dampned but not wet, you can use Windex or something similar but I wouldn't spray the keyboard directly. Spray the cloth. A toothbrush could be used as a rubbing device while wiping with the damp cloth. Try not to wedge things under the keys.
