Corrupt Fonts ruining everything...

So I've posted here before with what I thought were some simple problems; but they're getting worse everyday.

I'm pretty sure that some corrupt fonts are preventing me from getting all sorts of programs working now (ical, activity monitor, stickies, etc.).
I've repaired permissions, used Disk Warrior, resolved duplicate fonts with font book, and tried to get font finangler to work but it just gets the spinning-ball-of-death.

What fonts should I remove to truly test if this is a font issue? Am I removing All fonts to another folder temporarily?
Or, I guess, I would only be moving the fonts from my Home/Library/Fonts and my Library/Fonts directories, and not my System/Library/Fonts?

Hi Benny11,

There's a couple of things you can try.

First, clear the font caches using Font Finagler.

If that alone doesn't do it, read through my FAQ. I would first follow the instructions in the last section to replace all of the OS X fonts with fresh copies. If after that the problems persist, try reducing the active fonts to those listed in the FAQ/tip.

Let us know what happens.

Thanks for the link; so much to sort through.

Unfortunately, Font Finangler just seems to spin when I try to clean the font caches. Pacifist spins too; so I can't reinstall the font packages from the OSX install discs. I think these two programs are trying to access fonts as well.

I've been able to move the user/library/font files to a separate folder; but the library/font files "are in use" and can't be moved.

I'll keep working on this...

You know, sometimes I am convinced that computers are possessed! They have a life and mind of their own. I printed off the 12 page link from above and planned out my attack strategy...

I was going to set up another user link to source out if I truly was having font issues.
Second I was going to pair things down to the most basic fonts, so I could get Font Finangler up and running again. And rename the office font folders to prevent reinstallation of fonts...

Anyways, I plan my attack and then, with a simple reboot...after countless reboots, and permission repairs, and font finangler attempts, etc.....
Things seem to back to normal; working fine!
So that's good news.
Thank you for the help and goodnight,
Ben

Glad to hear things are working, Benny. From some of what you describe above with simple applications hanging, the problems are likely deeper than fonts. If the problems come back, then I would consider reinstalling the OS. If you do, make sure to do an Archive and Install. Also make sure to turn on the options to preserve your personal settings and preferences.

Then there's likely more wrong with the OS than a simple Repair Permissions can fix. It also may be errors with the hard drive. Boot to your OS X Install CD/DVD. Don't install the OS when it gets to that point. Instead, launch Disk Utility from the Apple menu bar. Choose the hard drive and click on Repair Disk. If it finds any errors, repeat the function until it reports no errors. If it can't fix the drive, then you'll need something more robust, such as Disk Warrior.

If there are errors, don't bother reinstalling the OS with an Archive and Install until you can fix them, or you won't get much of anywhere. You can do an Erase and Install, which would fix the disk errors (if there are any), but you would also than lose all of your data.

So, as this problem returns and persists...I am looking at an archive and install.

???: But here's my question: Will an archive and install keep what are possibly corrupt fonts or will it pair them down to base system fonts?

Things got better for a while when I used Pacifist to overwrite my core system fonts...but I haven't been able to delete or remove my Library/Fonts as they are "in use".

Hi Benny11,

An Archive and Install will replace all fonts normally installed by OS X, as it will any other system files. Since a Repair Permissions hasn't fixed the issue with the /Library/Fonts/ folder, you should probably do the install.

It is common for fonts to be "in use" even after you've closed all applications that you were using them for. But if the system continues to return that error even after a restart, then something is wrong.

If you do a Archive and Install, be sure to turn on the options to preserve your personal preferences and settings.

So before I archive and install, I have been trying to determine if it is indeed a corrupt font issue...

As suggested in a link found in this thread...

-I have created another user, and logged in this new account to find that the programs I have been having problems with work fine. This would lead me to believe that it could be one of two things: corrupt preference files for the applications within my regular user account; or problems within the user/library/font folder (as this is the only font folder that is accessed only by my regular user account).

Does that sound right?

-I then moved the preference files for the problem apps. from within my user/library/preferences folder, and moved them to a new folder. I then rebooted to find that the programs still would not open.

I'm moving the fonts out of my user/library/fonts folder, to a new location...
I've been working on moving the large number of fonts from my library/fonts folder, but even with all apps. closed it says that they are "in use"...so it is a laborious task, to say the least.

Any thoughts?

With that information, it sounds like you have various problems. It's safe to assume that corrupt preferences are an issue since some of the problems go away in the new account. But on the other hand, it's a global OS issue when you still can't remove fonts from the /Library/Fonts/ folder. You should be able to move fonts in and out of that folder pretty much at will.

An through all this, I just now noticed you're using Font Book. You may want to try cleaning up Font Book and your font cache files. First, follow these steps as outlined by Dr. Smoke in Undoing Font Book.

Then follow this additional step.

Download and run Mark Douma's Font Finagler to clear the font cache files on the system.

In the end, it may be Font Book itself that keeps you from removing fonts from the /Library/Fonts/ folder. The way Font Book works now is to close fonts without moving or deleting them from what is normally an active fonts folder. Since Font Book is the one handling whether or not the font is active, the font is indeed "in use". Font Book has a lock on it. This is a bit of conjecture on my part since I don't use Font Book, or even have it on my Mac.
