Q: iPhone 4S: Can't sync photo albums since latest update

I have never had any issues syncing my photo albums to my iPhone from iTunes until the latest iTunes update.

As soon as the iTunes update (10.6.3) was completed, I plugged in my iPhone (5.1.1) and got an error 1140 message (I tried several times, including after restarting my computer, with the same message appearing every time). I later realized that in the "photos" tab in iTunes, "all photos and albums..." was checked (prior to the update, I had selected several albums as I do not have enough space on my phone for all of my pictures).

However, I cannot select the "selected albums, events, and faces..." as it is greyed out.

Any thoughts?

I'm in exactly the same situation. I did find info online that said by deleting the cache from the iPhoto & Aperture libraries (ctrl-click on library file, show package contents & delete cache folders) would solve the issue but didn't work for me. Also, like @silvad, I can no longer select albums to sync in the iTunes photos tab.

I have now switched off photo syncing on both my iPad & iPhone and they sync fine. A workaround, not a solution!

Clearly seems to be a bug with iTunes 10.6.3/iPhoto and Aperture update.

So, all of a sudden, today, eveything is back to normal... Not sure what happened, as there was no update, and I don't think I did anything, but the photo albums aren't greyed out anymore....

    And the problem's back again!

I think it has something to do with switching from iPhoto to Aperture, but can't pinpoint what it does exactly and/or why it was ok this morning...

Take a look at this Apple article -> iPhoto 6 and later: Rebuilding the iPhoto library

Then try to rebuild the iPhoto library by launching iPhoto while holding the Command and Option keys.

Do you still see the error or grayed out options under Photos in iTunes?

The problem seems to be with Aperture.

I have always used iPhoto for my pictures, but opened my library with Aperture to tried it out with the update. When I close Aperture, I can no longer sync my pics to my iPhone. However, if I open the library with iPhoto, then I can sync them again.

I guesse I won't use Aperture until Apple fixes this...

    Hi silvad,

I have the exact issue with you and confirmed that it came from switch over from iPhoto to Aperture.  My iTunes photo sync option will grey out as yours.

    To resolve this :

    - Shut down Aperture.

    - Shut down iTunes

    - Lanuch iPhoto

    - Re-lanuched iTunes.

Your photo sync option will come back.  I guess it involve some read/write access issue on the database.  Bear in mind that, the "grey-out" issue will come back again everytime when you launch Aperture

I was delighted that Aperture can read the same library of iPhoto as it offers much more feature and run much faster than iPhoto.  I planned to sync the Aperture library with my iOS devices instead but however, it doesn't let me to sync "event in past two months" ... for example.   I am forced to stick with iPhoto then.

    Cheers,

I am having the same issue.  When I sync without Photos, it works just fine.  However, I can't sync my photos with my iPhone 4S or new iPad.  I did try to sync one folder at a time to find with any of my photos are corrupted, but it just doesn't work at all.  I can't even sync A PICTURE.  This problem happened right after I upgraded my iTunes.  Until then, I was just fine.

I have a similar problem. Got a new 16 gig iPhone 4s (though it says capacity is only 13 gigs). When I tried to synch the contents of my old 16 gig iPhone 4 it says not enough room.  I see that photos are taking up all the room but iTunes does not allow me to control what to synch from iPhoto. It's insisting on important everything no matter what I click on in iTunes. I'm running os 10.5.8.  Hence iTunes cannot synch anything. If I switch of my music library the extra room is taken up by iPhoto which overloads my 16 gigs. Cannot control what to synch with in terms of photos.

So I cannot synch anything at all rendering  my iPhone useless. I'm thinking there's a compatibility issue with the new iTunes update and 10.5.8 and maybe my old iPhoto app that is part of 10.5.8.

Does this now mean I have to buy snow leopard and then the new iLife as well to make my iPhone 4s wrk? That seems unfair. But maybe that's wrong. Anybody have suggestions?

I have this problem since upgrading to iphoto 9.4.

    a) error 1140 - deleted cache: no change

iTunes can seemingly not access the iphoto library (or whatever) as when I select the "Sync Photos from iPhoto" the amount of space is not calculated whereas it is if I select a different source.

Yes, iphoto opens and seems to work normally.

    Any ideas anyone?
    Hilary

As an update, I have rebuilt the iphoto library   (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2638)  but still have the problem

it happens also with OSX 10.8.2 and IOS 6 - so you do not have to upgrade to mountain lion

Same here - did all the steps evryone mentioned and still cannot get rid of the grayed area which now doesnt let you sync selected albums. I am waiting for a miracle like with the last upgrade - but if there is a workaround it now - would welcome
