The iPhone 4 and 4S both have two microphones. One is at the bottom of the device (for normal calls) and the other is at the top (used for speakerphone and video chat). If you look, you'll see a small pinhole next to the earphone jack. That is the microphone that is currently failing you. If you are under warranty, I would recommend taking it to the nearest Apple Store for a replacement device.

There's also a chance that the pinhole is clogged. I've seen them clog multiple times with makeup and dirt... If by chance your device got wet, it could be a sticky substance clogging the mic.

Then again, you could have a legitimate hardware failure. It can be replaced but will void any warranty you may still have. On the 4S, it is the audio flex which is also connected to your earphone jack, vibrate switch, and volume keys. I would only allow a professional to perform such a repair if I were you.

I hope this helps!

I recently bought an iphone 4s from bangkok. I am a resident of new delhi. I was sold the phone by telling that its a product of international one year warranty so need not to worry.

As i started using the phone, I have realised that the microphone of the phone doesnt work. I keep on speaking but noone can listen to me on the other side. I tried headphone and it was fine. I tried speaker phone with mic on top and it was fine.

I called apple to find out that this is a replaced handset which has been replaced by Apple.

After all the ifs and buts, It was agreed with them that it is still a product of Apple and is under one year warranty. They have agreed for replacement but only if I can take this phone to a apple store in Korea or Australia. Which is highly impossible for me.

I wonder what to do. Whether to speak with apple again to see if they can provide replacement in New Delhi itself, or ask a local technical expert to repair it for me.?

Kindly advice what should I do to get my mic working fine.
