First create a backup using Time Machine, if you are not familiar with TM then please watch the Time Machine Tutorial. However you need to be more descriptive, when you say upgrade do you mean upgrade the machine to a new computer or simply upgrade the version of OS X or something else all together?

At any rate backing up is the first step, once you have answered the question then you can get better answers.

First you have to upgrade OS X to Snow Leopard 10.6 6 or above, you can still purchase SL from Apple's online store for $29, then run 10.6.8 Update Combo to get to 10.6.8, then open the Mac App Store and purchase Lion 10.7.x for $29.99 install following the directions on screen and run Software Update. Before doing ANY of this backup as instructed, then carefully read:

LION SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  • OS X v10.6.8 or later
  • 2GB of memory (4GB STRONGLY recommended)
  • 8GB of available space
  • Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
  • Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
