Can I play AVI, MKV (H.264) video files via connection kit in ipad3?

Dear All,

I would like to buy the connection kit for ipad 3 (new ipad).

* Does it support all makes/brands of SDHC and micro-SDHC cards, for example from Sandisk, Samsung, Transcend, etc?

* Any limit on the capacity (for example 4GB; 8GB, 16GB, ...) of memory card?

* Is there any restriction/limit on the size of photo, audio, video files that can be used with this device?

* I want to use it to play AVI, MKV (H.264) or any other video file of upto 4-5 GB. The files will be copied to the SDHC or micro-SDHC meomory card and the card will be inserted in the connection kit. The connection kit will be inserted in the ipad3 connector to access and play the video file from ipad3.

* I would like to play the video files directly from the memory card, without copying to ipad 3. But if copying is the only possibility then its fine too.

* Should the movie be copied in a particular directly structure, like DCIM directory?

Following link says that playing H.264 videos is possible.

Thanks for clarifying.

Question 1: Yes

Question 2: It worked for a 32gb memory card. I don't have a bigger card, so it might work with higher capacities

Question 3: Not that I noticed, but you can't transfer audio

Question 4: Can't transfer other video formats other than mp4 (or m4v)

Question 5: Only playable if copied

Question 6: No, the iPad scans the whole card and shows you all videos and photos on the card on the screen (not in folders)

Also MOV and AVI, assuming the latter has M-JPEG video (but NOT video formats common with scene AVI's).

Nope, those MUST be under DCIM (doesn't matter where, in which subdir, there) and must be named 12345678, where there should be a letter / numeral value instead of the numbers. It can't even contain - marks.

For MKV files, you'll need to use MKV-capable players. I recommend It's Playing and Buzz Player the most. Please read http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/goodplayer-developers-release-hardware-mkv-vid eo-player-powerplayer for additional info / links.

If you do want to stick with importing videos via CCK, you'll need to "remux" these MKV's to MP4's (MOV's / M4V's). For that, you'll need to use, for example, Subler. See http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/watching-videos-taken-max-roundup-mkv-mp4m4v-v ideo-converters for more info.

It is, if you transfer them via the standard iTunes File Sharing (the one under the Apps tab) to strictly a third-party multimedia player like the above-recommended It's Playing and Buzz Player. However, you should always try remuxing first as it results in the most optimal solution. If you have a friend with a Mac, ask him to allow you to use his Mac for some hours while you remux your MKV's to MP4's with Subler. (Note that there are remuxers for Windows as well; however, I don't know them very well so I can't recommend any title.)
