I have exactly the same problem. Recoginizes the USB3 but no USB2 at all... powered or unpowered. I take it back to the store right now...

I hope this is a problem of my model and it is not endemic...

Has anyone seen any improvements in their USB3.0 ports working well after the Apple Software Update from last week, July 20th, 2012?

  • vopt Level 1 Level 1

I installed not this one, but the SMC update 1.0 for the MacBook Pro retina. I have seen no improvement with my USB 3 issues. Here are the devices I have and what they are currently doing:

    1. SuperSpeed USB 3.0 to SATA 2.5" enclosure by SIIG

Result: Works at expected USB3 speeds. Drive (Seagate momentus XT 750) mounts every time.

    2. SIIG USB 3.0 4 port hub

Result: This is seen as a USB 2 hub. Devices connected to the hub are not recognized.

    3. Thermaltake Blacx duet 5G hard drive dock

Result: Sometimes connects but only at USB2 speeds. Connected hard drives sometimes mount, sometimes not.

    4. Patriot SuperSonic Magnum 128gb USB memory key

Result: Connects and works reliably, but only at USB2 speeds.

So, 3 out of 4 USB3 devices I have do not work correctly with my new retina MacBook Pro.

I'm not happy. Hope Apple fixes this fast.

Apple HAS fixed this, the fix is in the update you said you did not install.

Thanks, but that one is not for the MacBook Pro Retina, I CAN'T install it.

I installed the one called "MacBook Pro Retina SMC Update 1.0"... and it did not fix the problem.

About MacBook Air and MacBook Pro Update 1.0

This update fixes an issue that can lead to increased CPU power consumption, and it improves compatibility with some USB devices.

This update is recommended for all Mac notebooks introduced since June 2012.

Install the Macbook Air and Macbook Pro Update that everyone's telling you to install.

It seems you're being really ignorant. You have a Macbook Pro, it should work with that update.

  • vopt Level 1 Level 1

Kriswin, I'm not being ignorant. This is what happens when I try to install that one:

Do I really have to downgrade to Lion to install it? Shouldn't Mountain Lion already have the right stuff?

  • Kriswin Level 1 Level 1

Unfortunately, until Apple releases the same update for ML and onwards, yes. I'd personally just wait until they resolve it.

Sorry, I did not catch that you were already running 10.8.

One common problem seems to correlate with non-Apple extensions, possibly loaded long ago to support other external drives.

Linc Davis suggests this as a way to find those non-Apple extensions:

Please copy or drag -- *don't type* -- the following command into a Terminal window, press Return, and post the output (if any):

    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 } '

Screen Shot 2012-07-28 at 1.05.49 PM.pngScreen Shot 2012-07-28 at 1.23.21 PM.pngSo i have the new MBPRD and I just updated to moutain lion and i also copied the text into terminal that Grant Bennet suggested. Here you can see that the USB 3.0 is mounted and the connection speed is correct with 5 GB/S, but I'm still only achieving read and write speeds of usb 2.0. I don't have any issues, with it mounting or anything else for that matter, works fine, but will not read and write at USB 3.0 speeds. Could this really be a issue with apple or is it the brand I'm using(lacie rugged usb 3.0)?? Thanx for the suggestions so far everyone, hopefully this can be resolved SOON!

    Found these :

Could Parallels be screwing it up? Parallels is not running.

I have had USB3 issues from day one with a new retina MBP in both Lion; updated with all updates, and now with ML with all updates including firmware.

Given the number of problems people are having with various different USB3 devices, I suspect driver issues.

I use a NewTech VoyagerQ to mount HDDs and each time I fire up the device, I have mounting issues(SBOD). Mostly, I can just reLaunch Finder and then USB3 usually works, had issue using Time Machine even after Finder refresh.

This computer is very clean, manual fresh install of OS, all new user accounts, not Migration Assistant under Lion. Happens under guest accounts. Not right.

While the update may have addressed some issues, not all problems have gone away.

I have filed crash reports to Apple.

  • Grant Bennet-Alder Level 9 Level 9

Parallels should not be an issue, as long as you have the proper version for the Mac OS X you are running.

  • vopt Level 1 Level 1

It did make a difference though. I removed the parallels kexts, and now the patriot memory stick works at high speed. The other two devices are still slow.
