The troubleshooting guide seems pretty useless for this issue as well as pretty much any other problem you could have!
restart ur mac or pc without disconnecting ur phone from the cable
Same thing happened to my dad's phone after trying to install IOS 6. Tried everything. He finally took it into an apple store and they told him his phone was trashed., there was nothing they could do. He lost everything. Not happy with Apple
Happened to me last update. After hours on phone with Support. Ended up at Apple. They said all they could do was give me new phone. Lost all my info. Sorry!!

My iphone's (3g) stuck too - I just wanted some apps so I thought I'd update the phone, I've tried to recover it 20+ times, thinking of going to the apple store - this ***** -.- watched many youtube videos and read different forums but nothing seems to work. Hopefully the Apple store won't fail me too
Mine has too. I am going to try switching off the computer with device attached and starting again as someone has suggested and I will see if this works.

If you started your device in recovery mode by mistake, restart it to exit recovery mode. Or you can just wait—after 15 minutes the device will exit recovery mode by itself.
Just now I got error while updating my iPhone 4 to iOS 7, and it stucks in the DFU mode. But I found the solution after I installed TinyUmbrella.
1. Disconnect your phone from iTunes
2. Turn Off your phone
3. Install TinyUmbrella
4. Connect your phone again
5. Click "Exit Recovery" at the top right of TinyUmbrella apps.
6. Done.
Your phone will restart then it returns to normal mode again. Hope it helps!
