My imac intel based was crashing for no specific reason.... I took it in and the hard drive was replaced. It just crashed on me while I was surfing the net. I have photoshop and Lightroom software. It crashes a ton when I am working in Photoshop. There is 16 GB of memory and I have 14.54 GB free. Any ideas as to what is going on??? I'm a little shocked!!!

Yeah .... I then turn it on again from the button on the back...

Most likely not, however exactly which iMac do you have and what RAM did you purchase. If it's not the correct RAM it can cause what is called a Kernel Panic which isn't good and could damage OS X. You aren't sure of the exact machine click on Support in the upper right, then click Tech Spec's and enter the serial number to find your machine.
I have tried the SMC before and I just unplugged it all and took it into the apple store where it was repaired for the last 13 days.... Strange...
I also made sure to get the right memory. I just thought maybe because it was much cheaper than the apple store that it might not be good.
The memory has been in the machine since Dec 2010....

You may have a failed RAM DIMM, they can an do fail. If your machine has been getting Kernel Panics they will be listed in the KP log. Look in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports for any Kernel Panic logs. If you find one post it in it's entirety. Also carefully read the XLab article on Kernel Panics
You have some kind of hardware fault. You could try running the Apple Hardware Test, but that's more often than not a waste of time.

I took my computer to be repaired because the screen would sporadically dim on the left half?? I also told them about the crashes and they checked it out and then got back to me saying I also needed a new hard drive? I assumed that was because of the crashes...... Or shut offs....
As Linc mentioned you have a hardware failure. You need to take the machine back if the repair was recent. If the machine is covered by AppleCare you also may want to inquire about a replacement machine. Apple will generally replace a machine that has been repaired 3x if it's covered by AppleCare.
