Delete all jpegs from RAW+JPG combos?

The bigger problem is when you import an image as RAW+JPEG pairs, Aperture treats the pair like a single image. You can view one or the other but not both at the same time. I don't think there's a way to just delete half of the pair. I ran into this a couple of years back and gave up.

If anyone knows a way to delete half of RAW+JPEG pairs, I like to hear it.

I gave up trying to delete the JPEG half of the RAW+JPEG pairs. I normally only shoot RAW. I was shooting the pairs back when my Canon T2i was new and not yet supported in Aperture. When the proper RAW support appeared I stopped shooting pairs.

I have recently started to shoot RAW + JPEGS and what I've been told to do is download just the JPEGS', review and pick out the best,make a note of the file numbers and just download those RAW files for editing then delete all the images off the card and start again. It's MUCH faster reviewing your images as JPEGS and you only download the best ones then as RAW files. - Makes sense?

This is built into Aperture (since v. 3.0). No need whatsoever to note the file numbers. From the always useful Users Guide:

Importing RAW + JPEG Image Pairs

Many digital cameras have a setting for creating a RAW file plus a JPEG file for each image as you shoot. Many photographers use the RAW + JPEG workflow for the convenience of publishing the JPEG images quickly while saving the RAW files for high-resolution prints. Aperture provides several options for importing the RAW + JPEG image pairs. However, if you decide to import the JPEG image files only, you can always go back and import the corresponding RAW files later.

Note: The RAW + JPEG Pairs import setting remains in effect from import session to import session.

To filter RAW + JPEG pairs during import

If you import only the JPEG files and then later decide you want to download the RAW files as well, you can have Aperture identify and import the RAW files that match the JPEG files in your Aperture library.

To import the RAW files that match the JPEG files in your Aperture library

1. Choose “Matching RAW files” from the Import pop-up menu.The Include pop-up menu appears below the Import pop-up menu.
2. Do one of the following:
   • To import all matching RAW files regardless of rating: Choose “All matching files” from the Include pop-up menu.
   • To import all RAW files matching JPEG files that are unrated or better: Choose “Unrated or better” from the Include pop-up menu.
   • To import all RAW files that match the current rating: Choose “Current filter” from the Include pop-up menu.

Personally, I record only RAW. I spent extra on storage (still a bargain, imho), but now I don't have to clutter my front yard with pairs, and un-paired singles, and some method of knowing which have been processed and re-paired, and which haven't, and which cards can be safely re-formatted, etc. etc. RAW-only requires extra storage, but is a simple workflow. I like simple. (And I don't like the look of JPEG.)

The marketplace solved this problem! Its called Raw Hide, from SSoftltd.com. I'm only a customer, not part of the company. I use their product, ADD (Aperture Duplicate Detector) ALL the time. I had come across this RAW+JPEG issue myslef (frustrating Aperture can't solve it by splitting the pairs) and realized the solution was right in front of me.

I can vouch the ADD product works excellent. I have not used Raw Hide much -- YET. But I'm about to.... It looks like the solution I need right now. I will convert all my pairs that are lower rated to jpgs, and store the RAWs offline. All higher rated images I probably won't touch till I know more.

I just looked at the description of what it is doing. It looks like you could do pretty much the same by simply exporting the image versions and reimporting, then deleting the original raw+jpeg image.

Processing with RawHide will break your lossless workflow, since it will create a jpeg with less resolution. You will no longer beable to undo earlier edits. The solution required here is a simple tool that will turn images with two original files (raw+jpeg) into images with only one, but will keep one of the originals unchanged and keep the current version and all metadata tags.

Thanks for the fast reply! You are correct. However, my images are in many projects and many albums, and I don't think there is a way to export out of those and import directly back into them. Raw Hide looks like it will work.

I am only working on my lower rated images and do not need the lossless workflow for them. I will leave my higher rated images alone for now.

Here's what I came up with. Find all low rated images, meaning they have low importance, but yet I desire to keep for reference (time, place, etc), and converted them to JPG with RawHide. This kept all images in their multitude of albums, projects, etc, and retained any comments, ratings, etc. All of which was critical for me. Then, I exported the RAW originals to an external folder, where I can later pick them up with Aperture's connect jpg to raw import if needed. Eventually then, I may just delete the Raw folder or at least put it away in cold storage.
