Macbook Pro Retina heat issues?

No not at really. I know where you are talking about, it is not only directly under the screen but also slightly to the right? That spot under the screen heated up a bit when the computer was doing some some heavy processing in iMovie, but it was not excessive at all. Has been running fine termperature wise.

That area is the location of the processor and the graphics processor so it's going to get warm with certain activities such as gaming or video work. Are your fans running excessively? You might download a widget called iStat to see if your components are operating within their allowable temperature range (as described in the computer technical specs).

This is my third Pro, and they can heat up when doing heavy work. Nothing with the retina Mac Book Pro has seemed at all excessive to me. Also, it was easy to hear the fan running with my old aluminum Pro when it got warm, but now with the new one, the fan is much quieter, and if there's much ambient noise, I don't hear it.

Yes, I have felt warmth underneath, but nothing uncomfortable. When the computer was crunching an iWeb project for twelve minutes it got nice and warm in that spot, but again it did not concern me. Just writing and posting right now, there is not warmth at all right now to speak of.

I have the new MacBook Pro with Retina and I also have this problem.

When I use Netflix in the browser (Chrome), I have the following temperatures after watching a video for 15 minutes:

• CPU Heatsink Temperature: 142° F
• Airport Card: 130° F
• Enclosure Base 1, 2, 3: 99° F

When I use Spotify, XCode, Safari, I have the following temperatures:

• CPU Heatsink Temperature: 101° F
• Airport Card: 108° F
• Enclosure Base 1, 2, 3: 92° F

I haven't tested it with more intensive apps yet. I'll post more info as I discover them.

You're right. I did some reading and found that this is normal in MB Pros.

However, what happened between my last post and now is that my laptop has rebooted twice, while watching Flash videos. I'm guessing this isn't normal, right?

I am a big "Macbook Pro runs too hot" proponent. So I went into my Apple store installed iStat on one of their new MacBook Pro Retina Display laptops and went for it. I ran HD flash video, I ran HTML5 video players. I went into iPhoto and held down the left arrow key and let the machine run through all the pictures as fast as it would load them.

I kept checking with iStat and am truly amazed. I am not sure if it is Ivy Bridge, the vent holes on the bottom, the way graphics are handed off between the descreet and onboard GPU, but that computer never warmed up to "2011" MacBook Pro temperatures.

I was doing some naughty things to that machine, and she performed like a champ.

I did notice the heat vent under the screen hinge has been redesigned and now there is a bigger gap between the vent and the edge of the screen. Like I said also the vents around the underside of the perimeter of the case might also help out, especially since the vents are located right under where the segmented battery is located.

As far as thermal issues. I am impressed.

The new MacBook Pro 15" with retina display is a marvel of technology. and I look forward to see what the second generation of this product looks like.

It's just running hard. My first mac too, but I feel the same discomfort under the computer. Cool thing tho, is you can't hear the fans! 😉

Actually yes. I double check the open activities (i was working on keynote, no net/wifi/bt, unplugged) and it turned out Google Chrome Helper was sucking 100% of the processor. Once I forced it to quit the MBP turned silent again.

We just picked up our second MBP Retina, this time thr 2.6 Ghz package for the extra memory. No issues with excessive heat.
