Dec 21, 2013 11:13 PM in response to mswagby Jason Kulas,Argh, I NEED a 17" Macbook. I don't care about Retina. How stupid.

Dec 22, 2013 1:21 AM in response to Jason Kulasby Ian Cheong,At this point, you can:
a. choose a 15in retina which can show the same amount of screen text as a 17in (+/- some reading glasses to magnify it a bit!)b. check regularly to see if any 17in MBPs come up as refurbs
c. get a second hand 17in
d. wait for Apple to release the 17in retina MBP....

Dec 31, 2013 5:54 AM in response to David Bengaliby wcohen,That arena for Apple regretfully doesn't give a user the option to describe what this thread is talking about. The Apple arena seem to have pre-designated discussion areas--which excludes the 17" MacBook Pro.
Am I wrong on this?

Jan 7, 2014 2:36 AM in response to mswagby STUPENDOUS!!!,I got a 15" MBPro with retina screen... it's fabulous and I use a 23" monitor as well. My old 2009 17"MBPro does have a gorgeous LED screen & 2x Graphic card choices that I do miss and it just might actually be better than the retina? (i.e. I ordered the non-reflective surface for starters) and it served me well for 4 years... but I am knocked out by 1TB SSD, 16GB RAM, T'bolt.... I no longer have any Firewire or eSATA docks or drives, just USB 3.0 & T'Bolt. I do have a Belkin T'Bolt Express Dock that has one FW800 port for plugging in client's drives or a DV camera if necessary... But I am really digging the new T'Bolt tech. If Apple had brought out a 17" I may have bought it, but the 15" is lovely :-)

Jan 9, 2014 5:06 PM in response to mswagby pc2k5,I am thinking that for the 17" MBP Retina to come back, the latest Mac Pro, which just came out, should be on the shelves, but also the 4K monitors and at a decent price point. $2000 for a 4K monitor is not enough customers on the desktop.
There is an "eco-system" required to get up to that resolution and be productive. Both Mac and Windows must also be able to use those high resolution images with ease for the images and retina to be worth it.
I think Apple realized that with the 15" MBP retina that resolution needed support from software, desktop monitors, and also on the Windows SW and HW sides to be "productive". At least for the tradional mac professional in graphics and movies. This as opposed to say, just programmers or engineer which don't make up much of the customer base for Windows or Mac.A 4K image or an image that only looks cool on a Retina display is not going to be that valuable; and hence "productive" to others if they also don't have a retina display or the hardware and software to handle that 4K image seamlessly.

Jan 20, 2014 6:32 AM in response to pc2k5by wcohen,What is the best way to seek abreast of advance information on any possibility
of a returning 17" MacBook Pro with Retina display?

The only official source of good advance information would be Apple, but only if they choose to announce long before shipping as in the new Mac Pro. But aince Apple usually does not provide advance information for most models, that probably won't work anyway.

There wasn't a 17" mid-2012 model. The last 17" models were the late 2011s. You can check with Apple refurbs (but they go fast when they go up) or with eBay.
Good luck,
Clinton

That's an 8 month old prediction, It's no longer 2013, and it has not come to pass.

Mar 24, 2014 10:57 AM in response to wcohenby Network 23,I'm not even clicking on that link, because that would just encourage these sites that post unsubstantiated Apple rumors all the time to get advertising CPMs from all the gullible types who want to think there's a new 17" MacBook Pro or Aperture around the corner (hah!).
