gmail keeps telling me wrong password

My Gmail account won't work unless I am in a Wi-fi area, and even then only sometimes. It tells me my password is incorrect even when I know it is not.

iPhone 3GS (8GB), iOS 5.1.1

Don't know why you're having trouble getting gmail over 3G, but if you are frequently getting password not correct prompts try unlocking your account here: https://accounts.google.com/DisplayUnlockCaptcha.

I have logged into Gmail from different places a few times (one being work that routes internet through their servers in the US and I live in the UK) every now and then Gmail reports it has noticed that I am logging in from a different location and asks me to verify that it is indeed me logging in. As the iPhone doesn't use a web interface in the mail app that can handle that message it could be that Gmail is just not allowing the log in
