Updating Thumbnails... each time I open iPhoto

I have the same problem, but the Rebuild Database fixes it for awhile. Then something triggers it and it tries to rebuild the thumbnails and it can't find some of the photos. I have two options, Cancel or Find Photo. I have hit cancel about 100 times but it seems to just go and never stop. I have 40k photos in my library and it is 190GB ish big so I have never gotten to the end of canceling yet. I just Force quit, rebuild and 30 minutes later my library is back (for awhile).

Where is your Library stored? On your start-up disk? On an external?

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?

A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package

A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

I'm experiencing the same issue with iPhoto 9.3. I rebuild the library using each of the four option (only one can be used at a time with iPhoto 9.3)

with no success. It was the only library of my 15 libraries that exhibited this issue. Lastly I rebuild the library with iPhoto Library Manager and iPLM crashed. Evidently that one library is damaged in such amanner that It can't be rebuilt by iPLM nor merged into an new library. iPLM crashes with the following mesage:

I have no idea what it means. I imported the Masters folder from the problem library into a new library. There were 15 files that could not be imported although they were formats that iPhoto does recognize, jpg, psd and CR2.

Go figure.

So by opening the package contents and copying the folder "Masters" only, not + "Previews", you get all the pictures in your library back?

BTW: I had a similar error wtih Photo Manager, erroring out on a rebuild. Whatever happened to our libraries is a doozy.

I went and copied my Masters folder and it got all the photos, 39,717 of them. The strange thing is everytime I open iPhoto there is a brief pop up of updating thumbnails. It successfully goes through, it maybe is literally 1 second. I can't remember if iphoto before the unified library patch did this at every boot.

I hope this isn't a timebomb ticking everytime I launch.

IPLM's Jun 12 update still shows some features are not yet supported.

is it possible that this 'feature' is permanent since iPhoto for iOS does it too? if so, this is a giant step backwards....

Is the 'Updating thumbnails' thing which is crashing my iPhoto Library Manager, really a Feature of the updated iPhoto? It slows down the whole process of opening iPhoto for me. It didn't ever used to do that since the update so could someone please let me know. I'm trying to use iPLM to copy videos between 2 libraries and because of this 'feature' it crashes everytime 😟

No. It's a bug. It's happening to one of my 10 libraries. The other 9 work just fine. The library that it's happening to still works fine and the photos are not in jeopardy. I just click on the Later button and go about my work.

I've got the exact problem and was happy to know that it is a bug and waiting for an update.

Now the update has come today as 9.3.1. However, the bug still remain. Still updating thumbnails everytime I launch iPhoto. It would be nice if anyone got another solution for this.

The problem start to occur after 9.3 update.
