Computer name keeps changing.

I've read several items on this issue but have not found my answer.

My computer name keeps changing. I thought it was my printer network that was causing it but now I see that the "new" name is ACTIVE in Network-->WINS of System Preferences. It shows the computer's WINS-->NetBIOS Name as Name-2. And it says it is active.

Does anyone know how:

To turn it off so I can disable it?

What it is and how can I keep it from changing again?

Why this happens (see above).

I do have MS Office on the computer and I have locked down changes to my Printer Network, to NAME instead of NAME-2. (The printer is connected USB but has network capability.)

I only have my computer on the MAC Router, no other computers are networked to it. (I do have an iPad, iPod & iPhone.)

I keep putting the name back and it keeps changing itself back to NAME-2. This is driving me crazy.

Thanks!

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Are you useing both an Ethernet connection and your WiFi? If so turn the WiFi off.

I believe I would say that I do NOT have an Ethernet Connection. I used the printer cord from my printer to the Ethernet Connection on my iMAC.

Then, I have my Wi-Fi running to the MAC Router plugged into the wall and and Ethernet Cord from the MAC Router to an AT&T Gateway (U-Verse). I have the AT&T Gateway Wi-Fi turned OFF.

I was running my printer through the Wireless but it was way too slow. So, I disabled the wireless on the printer and verified that it is in fact not on.

Does any of this information help and answer your question?

Thank you . . .

Might try this...

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712

10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

Its a DNS issue, but I don't know what? I'm running my network through a 4th Gen Time Capsule with a 2001 Imac running Mountain Lion 10.7.4. This is the only mac on the network and I know that there is no other "Corey" device running.

Jun 20, 2012 3:19 PM in response to bmhcjs

Unfortunately, my computer has started to do this again after trying BDAqua's idea. Now it's going faster than it did before. I'm up to IMAC3 and it's never done that before.

I'm going to have to pay for tech support unless some other valid ideas get posted here. This is a mess and is starting to irritate me. I'm glad I'm not on my own but I'm sorry that you have the problem as well.

Hi Tarik,

I had changed my network name the other day as it had gotten to 10! I thought changing the name to something completely different might solve the problem, but obviously not!

I do have static DNS entries on my iMac, so I might try changing those to automatic and see if that solves the problem as thats the only odd thing that I can think of in regards to the DNS on the iMac. You don't have a similar DNS setup do you?

Jun 21, 2012 5:13 PM in response to RRFS

RRFS hit it on the head, I believe. I think this was the problem.

It took me a few days to figure out what you were getting at, I wasn't thinking anything in this area when it came to this problem.

You were correct as nothing has changed since I turned off my Ethernet. I'm sorry you didn't get the SOLVED points.

Now I'm just running on WI-FI and so far so good. I CONSIDER THIS TO BE THE ANSWER TO MY PROBLEM.

Tarik
