Q: SSD upgrade on new macbook pro?
I'm going to get the "classic" 2.9ghz 13" macbook pro soon, and the only thing i'm disappointed in is that apple still went with hard drives. That being said, i think i want to upgrade the hard drive to an ssd. I would just order the upgrade from apple but the 256gb is a little pricey for me, so i have a few questions:
- will installing an ssd myself void my warranty?
- i've never done any internal work on a computer, but i have no doubt i could do this myself. Even so, could an apple genius do it for me that way if something goes wrong its his fault?
- whats the best affordable ssd to get. I was looking at crucial because it was affordable but they look kind of cheap compared to the designs of samsung's and vertex 4.
- Lastly, if im doing this upgrade right when i get my macbook i would just need to install the os onto the drive instead of using a cloning program correct? Since Lion is "download only" with no disk what would i need to do that?
- on a side note, i was considering putting the ssd in the optical drives compartment but i decided against it because i have no problem with using external storage if i need to. I feel like putting the ssd in the main slot is a safer bet

When I installed my SSD (Crucial m4 512GB which I highly recommend) I used Lion DiskMaker to create a bootable USB flash drive. You just need to make sure that you download "Install Mac OS X Lion.app" from the App Store (which should be free with a new MBP). Just follow the simple instructions. Then boot from the Lion Install USB drive, reformat your SSD and install your Time Machine back-up (others differ on back-up methods - I just started using Time Machine when I upgraded to SL, but I love it).
And Bob's your uncle!
