my screen shows a red cross in a red circle and the support address! What does this mean?

I am trying to reset my classic. The apple symbol appears and then a red cross inside a red circle, it just gives the ipod support website address beneath it, but I can't get it to reset by the normal methods. Any ideas please?

iPod classic, Windows 7

That isn't a very good sign as the red X is usually an indication of a hardware malfunction, usually with the iPod's hard disk. See this article for information and assistance.
