@norman_bates Not necessarily, my sister forgot her passcode, when she plugged it into her MBA nothing happened, had to put it into Recovery Mode to 'Unlock It', Anyway this is an extract from the website that helped us;

  1. Disconnect the USB cable from your iPhone, but leave the other side connected to your Mac or PC
  2. Launch iTunes
  3. Press and hold down the Home and Sleep/Power button on the top of the iPhone to turn off the iPhone
  4. Press and continue to hold the Home button while you reconnect the USB cable to your iPhone, this will cause the iPhone to turn on
  5. Continue to hold the Home button until an alert message in iTunes informing you that an iPhone in recovery mode has been detected

The proper operating structure of iTunes is to allow connection of the passcode locked iPhone if it has previously been synced with that iTunes on that computer. The reason for this is so that the code can be reset if the owner forgets the lockcode, it also removes the 'iPhone locked out for xx minutes' message too

The only explanation to it is either the OP has re-installed iTunes for some reason or the device itself was never synced to that iTunes, or has been restored by the people who stole it and then they added a lock code

During the update and restore process, iTunes needs to contact Apple. Ensure that your computer has the following ports open and can access these servers:

* Port 80

* Port 443

* phobos.apple.com, albert.apple.com, gs.apple.com

You must also open access to the following VeriSign servers:

* evintl-ocsp.verisign.com

* evsecure-ocsp.verisign.com
