time machine problem

hi!

somehow my lion server crashed on tuesday. since this incident i'm having a problem with some time machine backup-logs in the system log. i am not able to read and understand what's wrong, but i can see that there is obviously a problem with something. can anybody help me with my logs?

I thnk I can take a guess at the error about being unable to mount Recovery partition - because there isn't one or it's got a problem. Note that on a RAID volume the recovery parition is not created when Lion was installed (see the explanation at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4649 for more details).

Are you using RAID volumes for your LION boot volume?

I have a MacPro that I just updated to Lion a few days ago that had a RAID as the boot volume and just started to use TimeMachine on it. The last step in the backup phases seems to be an attempt to backup the recovery partition - but if there isn't one or it has a problem I get this error just like you did.

In any event it appears that all your backups are working except for the Recovery partition part (but without seeing your entire console log it's hard to say for sure) - have you verified things are OK in TimeMachine by trying to restore a test file or perhaps even better a test file from every volume that gets backed up if you have multiple volumes?

Creating a recovery partition can be done before installing Lion on a RAID - see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4848 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4886 for more info. I have not done it yet so can't speak from experience, but I intend to look into it right away.

As for the Finder: ISGetIconFamilyFromStorage... errors I've no idea really. But does Finder crash? But you don't mention that it does or doesn't. Another thing to check is to see if this error is always in the same spot relative to the backups - in other words is it a byproduct of doing backups or some other random error that just happened to appear in the middle of the backup messages in your log?

If it's not related to the backups, try logging in as a different user to see if it's specific to the user or happens on everyone. If it doesn't occur with another user, I would suspect a problematic preferences file (the Finder's perhaps) - so you might try removing the existing one and Finder will create another one. If you've made a bunch of Finder preference changes you might want to make a note of what you've changed so you can redo them after the old preferences file is removed - and you've got to either restart Finder or reboot so that Finder will create a new default preferences file.

I should have read the description more completely about creating the recovery partition - you can't do it on the RAID volume at all - the requirements for the http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4848 article say you need to have an existing Lion or Mountain Lion startup volume with an existing Recovery partition, which can't be the case if you've got Lion (or Mountain Lion too I guess) installed on the RAID volume. So just guessing here, but it would seem that the Recovery partition not beeing a part of the boot volume is the problem which can't be gotten around - and will always cause the recovery error message duing the Time Machine backups.

However, to have the ability to recover the system would probably mean another disk that has a spare copy of Lion and it's own recovery partition, so that if you need to you have it available.

I'm not sure about this but I think that Time Machine keeps all of the information it needs in the volume that contains the Time Machine backups - so that if you need to restore from it you can do it from another Lion boot volume or it's associated recovery partition. But you should probably verify this by seeing what a Time Machine expert says or trying yourself with that spare Lion boot on another disk.

Actually I'm running this machine quite a long time now and as you described, there's the one problem with the recovery partition. Yes, I do run a raid on this particular mac and that causes this error-message.

For recovery there is a possibility to create a rescue-USB-stick with a recovery partition on the stick... I tried that and it seems to work perfectly. It's just like you created another boot-volume.

Now the thing with the ISGetIconFamilyFromStorage... It seems that this message is at the same place every time, but the numbers in the error are not always the same. And for a long time there were exactly 3 log-entries like the mentioned ones, but now there are 4 and sometimes there are nothing - this happened a few weeks ago. Like you said - this could be from the Finder-settings or stuff like this. BUT the good thing is, Finder doesn't crash! So I guess I was a bit too afraid of having a REAL problem with this error-messages.

Time Machine seems to backup everything like it should...
