I have only one Apple account but get this message when I try to update iPhoto, GarageBand and iMovie from the App Store. All this software was bundled with my Mac when I bought it last November. This happens when I am logged into the App Store with my only Aplle ID and when I am not logged in.

There appear to be a lot of Mac owners with the same problem but I have not found a solution that works for me. Apple Support does not seem to have an answer for this, which I find incredible and frustrating.

Any new ideas or fixes available?

Hi Robert, have you changed Username or Passwords since new... or added one?

I recently had this problem and the solution was connected to Spotlight. For reasons I don't remember I had set Spotlight not to include my Macintosh HD. Re-enabling Spotlight indexing of the MacHD solved it for me.

Have a look here: System Preferences>Spotlight>Privacy tab. Make sure that your Macintosh HD is not listed and if it is remove it from the privacy list using the minus button. Spotlight will re-index your HD but it should resolve the error message you are getting and enable you to download updates.

I had the same problem with the 'contact support' page. Note there's an easy-to-overlook popup menu above the 'description' field. If you don't selec an item from that field, 'send' won't work. This error is not in any way highlighted or flagged on the page. When did Apple turn into Microsoft?

I'm also having the same problem downloading updates. I tried reindexing with Spotlight - no luck. I will not delete and reinstall anything - this is not a Windows system.

I solved this. I had the exact same problem with my new MacBook Air 2012. I tried to install the iPhoto 9.3.1 update and got the same message you did, and I knew that I had associated my iLife '11 with the account I was using. So I followed the steps to check purchase history and saw that iTunes said "0 computers are authorized..."

In iTunes, signed in to my Mac App Store Apple ID, I went to "Store" on the menu bar and clicked "Authorize this Computer." I signed out and back in to the Mac App Store, and the update downloaded! That's it!

This must happen to people who use an Apple ID for their Mac App Store that is different from the Apple ID that they supply during their mac's setup. That one is probably automatically authorized, while the one you supply later is not. I hope you're still looking for answers and that this helps you.

I my case this is not a bug in the same way as others have described it.

There is an actual app installed which was installed by a different account (which has since been deleted), however I can't seem to be able to remove the mac's knowledge of it. Ironically I want the app on the system, but can't even rebuy it with the new account since it's attached to the original account and "update" being the only option just continues to give me the same error (the Spotlight "fix" just hides the problem until I click update).

I assume there's a hidden file somwhere containing a list of software the App Store thinks should be installed, no matter who originally installed it.

Oh, I'm running Mountain Lion if that helps anyone.

FYI, I have fixed my issue.

I created a temporary login account (with admin access)

Signed into the App Store using the AppleID of the old user who was removed (fortunately I knew who this was and had their password)

Reinstalled the apps which were complaining.

Uninstalled these same apps using the 3rd party app AppCleaner (I believe AppZapper or similar would also work), and in addition to the main app file, a small config file was also detected and deleted for each.

Deleted the temporary account.
