Jun 21, 2012 2:38 PM in response to jamesbrooks94by nmarshall002,Having tried (and failed) to solve this problem myself I took the iPad into an Apple store today and an Apple Genius failed to find anything wrong that he could fix. In the end he resorted to a full reinstallation of the OS. After this he plugged it in and the message didn't appear, so he pronounced the problem solved.
I took the iPad home, restored my content from a backup and... the message came back again.
If the problem is embedded in the backup that makes it very tedious as it means that I'll have to:
- get every piece of my user data to a safe place (or resign myself to losing data where there is no "export / reimport" option)
- reinstall the OS again
- individually set up every app from scratch and reinstall its data from my saved copies
As I really don't want to do this I'm going to have one more try at reinstalling the OS, but not immediately restoring the backup and instead setting it up as a "new" iPad (hoping that it does the carrier update successfully) and then restoring from a backup later.

Jun 21, 2012 3:28 PM in response to nmarshall002by Umbe,Same problem here, really annoying. Have iPad 1 (WiFi + 3G) and O2 in the UK. Problem started a couple weeks ago for me. There are a few discussions open on this topic (including the one I started last week), but none has the answer (some are way older). For one user, it disappeared by itself after a while...
@nmarshall002: Please let us know how it goes with your restore...
Thank You!!!

Jun 21, 2012 11:35 PM in response to Umbeby KathyGal,Well. Having had this problem for a couple of weeks, I, too, am one of those for whom it's simply stopped happening.
No reason, no change to what I've been doing, no attempt to re-install anything - just stopped.
The only consistent thing I've seen in this exchange is that the carrier is O2, but not everyone has said, so can't be sure.
Hope this happens to everyone.

Jun 22, 2012 1:57 PM in response to KathyGalby nmarshall002,I have to just hope it all corrects itself as my attempt to pin down the issue gave some new information but not a lot of hope!
I tried to eliminate as many of the potential causes as possible, so I:
- Set up a new portable computer with a clean install of iTunes, just in case my desktop computer setup was a part of the problem. It even had a different OS (Windows Vista rather than the WIn7 on my desktop).
- Removed the SIM and did a full recovery reinstallation (hold down Home key while plugging in USB cable until the relevant prompt appears...)
- Got to a clean image on the iPad and then set it up as a "new iPad", so there was no chance of anything in a previous backup affecting it. Set it up so the minimum happened (no sync of photos, music, apps, etc)
- Set up a single podcast just so something would sync and it did so successfully.
- So far there had been no prompts for any carrier updates.
- Disconnected the iPad and inserted the SIM
- Checked the carrier settings version (it was O2 12.0)
- Connected the iPad to the computer again and got the "carrier update" prompt.
- As before it said it had updated successfully, but it had not, as the message reappeared on each subsequent sync.
So it isn't:
- problems with iTunes
- interfering apps
- a poor PC setup, or anything obvious.
The only thing left is the iPad itself, or the SIM, so it's back to the Apple Store in a day or to with the new evidence to see what they have to say....
Don't you just love these time-saving devices!

Jun 22, 2012 2:04 PM in response to nmarshall002by Midpoint,Isnt it also possible that info/data from O2 is the issue? That we're all O2 customers would seem to be suspicious.
-
Jun 22, 2012 4:34 PM in response to Midpointby nmarshall002,Since I've restored my system back to where it was, after all the experimentation described elsewhere, I've consistently cancelled the prompt to update the settings and my iPad ((third generation, 64GB) is still at version "O2 12.0", whereas before I was continuing getting the message when the system said it had been updated to "O2 12.1", so something in that update isn't working properly.
However, O2 must have many users and I can't believe that it's affected all of them, as there's been so little activity on these forums, so I'm assuming it's the update combined with some other issue that is causing the problem. As I still have the problem even after I've made sure I'm running nothing but the bare operating system I'm coming to the view that the "something else" must be some issue with the hardware - either the iPad itself, or the SIM, but as I don't know where the update would be stored I'm going to have to go back to Apple again to ask them. Hopefully someone will know...

Jun 23, 2012 5:25 AM in response to KathyGalby gmac985,Ive had this as well for the last 2 weeks on O2. The problem was solved by getting another sim card.

Jun 23, 2012 10:43 AM in response to KathyGalby Reforger,It's annoying the **** out of me - just won't go away. If it's the SIM then I will be cancelling O2 and using someone else.

Jun 24, 2012 2:49 AM in response to nmarshall002by maggie060,The same is happening to me I took my Ipad which is the same as yours into my apple store yesterday it did puzzle them they suggested I get a new sim which I did and went straight to the store and the same thing happened so to their credit they gave me a new ipad so home I came happy as can be and you can guess after setting up my new ipad I get the same message when connecting to Itunes I am on o2 so looks like o2 is the problem or apple need to look into this or has anyone managed to solve this

Jun 24, 2012 4:51 AM in response to maggie060by KathyGal,And now it's back.
After a few days of normality, the same problem has started again. No change to any of my systems in the meantime.
Really aggravating and it's not as if we have nothing to do but try to chase down solutions.

Jun 24, 2012 5:07 AM in response to KathyGalby lovemyusedipad,How about you SIMPLY IGNORE IT.
Honestly, if this is the WORST that happens to you, ...
-
Jun 24, 2012 5:16 AM in response to lovemyusedipadby KathyGal,Look - I do mostly igonore it. It is very definitely not the worst that happens to me.
If this problem does not irritate you as much, you simply do not have to take part in this discussion.
