Jun 29, 2012 9:48 AM in response to ChrisL1993by owen-b,Same problem here, iPad 3 on O2, even though I've not bought any airtime for it in about a month. Just started happening a couple of weeks ago. Constant, several times a day, basically whenever iTunes sees the iPad on the same wireless network.

Jul 1, 2012 4:20 AM in response to maggie060by KathyGal,Results from Genius@Apple store visit yesterday:
- Not specifically aware of this issue but aware of similar(ish) issues with other carriers, and iTunes
- Scrolled through thread on this discussion, noted level of participation, numbers of replies and views
- Commented that Apple reviewed all threads/discussions and so would be aware of this iPad/O2 issue
- Was not surprised that O2 has consistently claimed ignorance of problem/denied any responsibility and has referred everyone back to Apple
- Discussed that the problem appeared to exist irrespective of the type of iPad
- Discussed the options that people have tried, including restores, re-installs - even of iTunes - new SIMs, and even new iPads
- Asked if I charged my iPad through a dock connected to a desktop computer - I do mostly. Speculated that those who charged their iPads by other means would not see/be aware of the carrier message
- View was that this issue is a combination of Apple and O2 software problems, so not surprised that none of the options tried had worked. This view also supported point about syncing/charging via the dock
- Did not specifically discuss the version of the O2 carrier update, or whether this was the cause, but taken as read from view that this is a software problem. Did not discuss whether it was possible to revert to earlier version of carrier
- Could not offer solution, view was that this is a 'waiting game' until both Apple and O2 resolve by updating iOS/carriers
If the Genius was correct, it seems that until this happens, or unless someone falls across a solution, we will have to live with this irritation.
I suppose the obvious way to try to avoid the message pop-up is to avoid connecting through a desktop machine by syncing through iCloud and charging through a adaptor/plug. For me, this would not be possible because I'm not on Lion (haven't upgraded because of everything I've read) and in my experience iCloud via Snow Leopard has problems.
Assuming that Apple does indeed review all these discussions, and can see the aggravation to, and time being wasted by, a sigificant number of users, here's a plea to provide a solution/update as soon as possible.

Jul 1, 2012 4:29 AM in response to KathyGalby norman_bates,This is O2 not Apple. They often update their carrier settings, the iPad won't pick up that settings are available unless O2 are pushing the updates out.
Get someone with a different phone who is also on O2 to check if they get new carrier settings (this is usually done through the SIM managent type app in their menu)

Jul 1, 2012 4:45 AM in response to norman_batesby KathyGal,As noted, the view is that this issue is a combination of factors from both O2 and Apple.
Please see the thread for the efforts several people have already made with O2 and Apple, and individually on their own set-ups, to narrow down the source of the problem.

Jul 1, 2012 9:52 AM in response to KathyGalby London User,This is in response to one of the points made by KathyGal.
I rarely charge my iPad directly connected to my MacBook Air, and instead through a connection directly to the mains. This O2 problems continually occurs even when my Air finds my iPad through my wifi connection ... and therefore, you can eliminate the problem being related to a direct connection to the computer.
Still frustrated...
