Q: carrier settings

Every time I place my iPad in its dock, I'm asked if I want to update the carrier settings. Anyone else have this? Anyone know why, or how to make it stop?

Although I have the same problem I'm not convinced it's totally O2 at fault.

With my (new) iPad connected by cable to my Mac and the iPad highlighted in the devices window, clicking on "Check for Update" always comes up with the same "New Carrier Settings are available..." This is regardless of how many times you check. It also happens in airplane mode and even if the SIM is removed. The problem then either lies with the iPad update server erroneously telling iTunes there is an update or else iTunes and/or the iPad incorrectly reporting the reported version is incorrect.

Well done Tuck! I'm staggered (and even more irritated that we all get different treatment)

Have just spent whole time since your post on phone to O2 on the number you provided.

Call 1 to "James" - explained problem and what you've asked us to do. James found an email about this, went off to check something, we got cut off.

Call 2 to "Eddie" on Pay & Go team - explained problem and what you've asked us to do. Eddie could find nothing about this, no emails, nothing, never heard of problem, not O2's issue, O2 don't issue carrier updates, has iPad himself and never had problem, blah. However, on my absolute insistence, he recorded my Cellular Data Number and postcode, (07514 952448 TW11 9PL), name etc and I was able to refer him to your details.

His advice is that everyone who has this problem calls O2, refers to as many other users specifically and that this will eventually lead to someone making a connection. His version was that each call generates its own report, not that a single case will be raised.

Everyone trying to do this should refer also to my specific call with Eddie at 6.00pm today 16 July - this was Eddie's advice about tracking the call as all calls are recorded and Eddie refused to give his surname.

Garth,  Glad to hear it's working for you.  But not for me.  Try plugging in the iPad via usb to your computer.  iTunes click Update.  You will probably be told there's a Carrier Update.  Click OK.  It confirms.  Click Update again - it will report there's an update.  And so on.

Okay folks, I was afraid that might be the result.  Each call is separate and none of them seem to link up at O2.  Let's try this.  If three (at least) of you are willing to email your Cellular Data Number (Settings-->General-->About) and your Post Code I will get though to O2 and insist they open a case number.  My email is:  tmoss@me.com.  I will really try to keep you all informed about what the situation is when I hear back.

And as to Gary 1401's comments:  Yes I think you are basically correct.  O2 pushes the update out to all of us.  The update completes correctly (we are all now on 12.1 - Settings-->General-->About).  Before this all started we were on 12.0.  However when O2 next inquires which version we are on it somehow is not told that we are updated - and so it pushes the alert again.  And again.  And again.  I don't think it's an iPad problem only because it doesn't happen with any other carrier.  Just O2.

And lets all try to talk to Eddie.

And just in case it is an Apple problem I have also left feedback at  http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html.  Your might do that too.

Just to reply to Tuck's further comments...

My point was that the information iTunes is receiving about a possible update comes from the iPad update server and not O2. The carrier update setting warning flags up even if the iPad is in Airplane mode when no carrier is involved and the iPad is not talking to O2...only the iPad update server. Now, where the iTunes update server is getting its information from...that's another matter!

Your Airport mode comment makes a lot of sense and reenforces my suggestion that we all should also file headsup with Apple.  I would suggest http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html
