Jul 17, 2012 3:19 AM in response to Paul Findonby Tuckerman Moss1,Okay, done - but don't hold your breath. And thank you to Kathy, NickM, Margaret, Paul and NickL. Irene, who I spoke to this time, warned that since it (thed update problem) happened with the SIM card removed that it wasn't coming from O2's servers and that the back office might just bounce it back without doing anything. However she did agree that the update itself was written by O2 and she would make note of that as well. Lastly, she promised that if it was bounced back to her that she would file a request that the matter be discussed with Apple. And, she said, she'd call me back with an update.
But, as I said, don't hold your breath.

Jul 17, 2012 4:18 AM in response to maggie060by nmarshall002,I tried the same thing just now, with the same result. Without a SIM inserted, I get no update message and synchronisation between iPad and computer proceeds immediately.

Jul 18, 2012 3:18 AM in response to nmarshall002by Tuckerman Moss1,But are you and Maggie0601 connected to the internet still via a wifi connection? If you are not connected then no, you will not be alerted again when the sim card is removed. You need to have an internet connection for the pushed update to come to you. I believe that all of us with both a sim connection and a wifi connection see the problem when the O2 connection is broken. I live in a place with such poor O2 connection that while home I am never connected to the internet except by wifi. If I shut of the wifi then I too no longer receive the alert. This point was made earlier by Gary 1401.

Jul 18, 2012 5:21 AM in response to Tuckerman Moss1by Gary 1401,Hi Tuck. I don't want to muddy the waters but when this problem first occurred it also affected my iPhone 4S. At the time I had just returned from abroad and had not been using the O2 network so assumed the problem was caused by O2 updating the carrier settings whilst I was away. The problem occurred with both my iPhone and iPad but whereas the carrier update sorted itself out fairly quickly as far as the iPhone is concerned, the iPad problem persists. From memory the iPhone updated the carrier settings two or three times before it stopped requesting the update. Interesting isn't it?

Jul 18, 2012 7:10 AM in response to Tuckerman Moss1by peterfromdunblane,Me too - driving me mad for about 3 weeks now. Only on my ipad, not on the iphone 4S. I am also on O2.
However. I noticed that a lot of Australian ipad users were/are
having the same problem with Vodafone which makes me suspect the ipad or itunes.

Jul 18, 2012 9:09 AM in response to Gary 1401by Tuckerman Moss1,Ah - the mysteries of our devices. All sent to haunt us. But yes, that is interesting. It is also interesting that it is only O2 that seems to have this problem. [Although peterfromdunblane now points of this is not entirely true either]. And that it appears to be all kinds iPads - but it looks to me like only a small sub-set of O2 iPad users have this problem. Guess we’re just lucky...

Jul 22, 2012 1:01 AM in response to Tuckerman Moss1by nwlaurie,A new (-ish) observation: When I respond to the dreaded message I get a "can't be done, iPad not connected' (paraphrased) message. A minute or so later I get the dreaded again but this time it 'updates' (does it though?) successfully. This has now turned into a consistent pattern.

Jul 23, 2012 5:20 AM in response to nwlaurieby Gary 1401,In further efforts to locate the exact source of the problem I deleted the ipcc file from ∼/Library/iTunes/iPhone Carrier Support to see what would happen. Unsurprisingly, iTunes simply downloads exactly the same file again (v12.1 file dated 4th June) and the update problem goes back to square one. I then downloaded a different ipcc file from Apple (for Ireland O2 and then Germany) and forced iTunes to update the carrier settings from these new files. After each forced upgrade the carrier update settings warning still persisted and the O2_UK_iPad.ipcc file was redownloaded from Apple once more. I'm not sure whether this file is writted by Apple or O2 although the file definitely comes from Apple through iTunes. After each "update" the O2_UK_iPad.ipcc file remains unchanged so I am unsure as to whether the iPhone or iTunes is not reporting that it's been updated or just re-installing the same file. If there has never been a carrier setting update then the ipcc file doesn't even exist, at least in the iTunes folder. Earlier I reported that the same thing has happened with my iPhone when this whole problem first started but there is no ipcc file for that. This may be because once an update to carrier settings has been completed successfully then the file is deleted. I just don't know enough about the whole process but it's still very irritating as you have to wait and click to accept the carrier setting update before a sync will start!
