Q: Some apps changed from YES to NO support Snow Leopard?

Hello, I see that some apps have changed and now don't support SL, in example the new iPhoto or iMovie.

My question is, having installed Snow Leopard in my computer, what happens?:

1) I had purchased an app that now is not compatible with SL, and I want to reinstall it.

2) I know that app had previously supported SL, if I purchase it, will be the last compatible version downloaded or it will not work?.

That is very confusing and Apple says nothing about it.

Only the latest version of an app is available from the Mac App Store. If your Mac is running Snow Leopard and the newest version of an app will only function on Lion, then the Mac App Store may not even allow you to download the newest version.

It is your responsibility to maintain backup copies of your apps just for cases like this.

I'm seeing the same thing on my Early Core Duo that can not even be upgraded to Lion and a Mac Mini that is running Snow Leopard.

I don't mind so much that the App's I bought just last year can no longer be updated.

But what gripes me is how they keep showing up as updates for a system that they no longer support.

Then go to the Purchases pane and Hide the apps that can no longer be updated and they will stop bothering you with updates. You can unhide any app that you have hidden at a later date.

Thanks, I tried that earlier. problem is that they are still there even after signing out, quitting and then re-opening the App Store...?

Humm, now I'm wondering if it might be because I have updated them in Lion that is running on one of my External FireWire HD's...?

OK the problem is that I think nobody makes that, because nobody said about that, who makes copies of the apps themselves being available on the App Store?, usually we make copies of our files, further because we have been "sold" like that.

IMO Apple should give users some "grace period" to download the lastest compatible version with SL to backup them, because I am sure many people haven't it.

I can't make that work either.   I have iPhoto 11, purchased from the App Store.   I hid it because I am constantly being told I have an update which I cannot download because I do not have Lion ... but the update ia atill being advised as available.

It's not the end of the world; just a nuisance.

Maybe this can help, a partial solution could be having an older version, due if you didn't a copy you can't get the last compatible with SL, and then search for the last patch you can apply here:

Actually, there is a notice from Apple just about every time that you buy content reminding you that it is your resposibility to back up your purchases. You have just been ignoring them.

    Not exactly, looking here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4461

    what it says is:

"We recommend backing up the contents of your Mac regularly, including photos, purchased movies, TV shows, and apps, to ensure that you can easily recover them in the event of a loss. If you need to recover a previously purchased app from the Mac App Store, you can redownload it if it is still available."

I understand from "if it is still available" is that a company can stop selling an app on the App Store, nothing is telling about an app can ends not being compatible with your OS. But if Apple stops selling then simply there is no Mac!!, so I see (rather, saw) no need to backup Apple apps.

IMO the whole about versions is not much clear there.

This problem could be easily solved only holding the last compatible version for each OS, if we can download updates for these programs in the Apple Support Download section, why not in the App Store?!

I am not referring to this statement from the FAQ. There is a notice when you purchase content, reminding you to back up your content.

But if Apple stops selling then simply there is no Mac!!, so I see (rather, saw) no need to backup Apple apps.

Apple pulls apps from the Mac App Store all the time. If you don't have archival copies and the app gets deleted from your Mac for whatever reason, and it is an app that has been pulled from the MAS, then you are SOL. That has always been the case, even from the early days of the iTunes Store. So you may rationalize all you want, but in the end if you loose it, you can only blame yourself.

I am interested in doing what you said about hiding apps in Purchases. I went to the Purchases pane but couldn't see how to hide iPhoto so that it won't keep bothering me with updates that I cannot use. Could you please explain exactly how to hide it?

Also, if someday I needed a new copy of the latest version of iPhoto for Snow Leopard, would I be able to get it from my Time Machine backups?

    Thanks.

There should be a little X near the button for an app on the Purchases pane. Clciking the button will hide the app.

There is a section in your account in the Mac App Store where you manage hidden apps and you can unhide them.

Thank you for the information. I see the little X near the button for the app on the Purchase pane. But I don't see any section in my Account where I can manage hidden apps and unhide them. Perhaps I have to actually hide an app before that appears?

    Connie,

You have the right thought but ...  go to purchases and click on the little x's of the ones you want to hide.   Those Apps will then 'disappear'.   You must then go to Store > View my account > and sign in ...  and that is the point when your account will show a section inviting you to review your hidden Apps.   And during that review you can then unhide anything you have changed your mind over.
