why doesn't my iCloud purchases automatically download to iTunes on my mac?

i get emails telling my icloud is almost full but when it is plugged in to the macbook it doesnt push my purchases to the itunes on the macbook ......anyone know why not ..it says that icloud automatically does this.....its not doing it for me!!! very frustrated as usual!
