Battery of 2012 MacBook Pro (non-Retina)

I have heard that the MacBook Pro with Retina has its battery glued into place, rendering the user unable to replace it themselves. Is this also true of the 2012 refreshed MacBook Pro that doesn't have retina?

This statement is not really correct. Apple does not consider the battery in a MacBook Pro (unibody, non-retina) to be user replaceable. Apple may not honor your warranty if you replace the battery yourself (while the Mac is in warranty).

That does not mean it cannot actually be replaced by a user. Soldered in memory, such as in Retina MacBook Pros, is truly not user replaceable. But the battery on a "regular" MacBook Pro is actually quite easy to replace. They are held in place by two "tri wing" screws (I've read #0 size), and there is a single connector to the motherboard that unplugs easily - but use a plastic tool to do so to avoid shorting. The screwdriver needed is not in most people's toolbox, but easily found online.

A few months ago we had a 2010 MacBook Pro with a bulging battery. Quality online replacements were near $100. The Apple Store replaced it for $115. So there is not much savings by doing it yourself.

Good luck.
