This statement is not really correct. Apple does not consider the battery in a MacBook Pro (unibody, non-retina) to be user replaceable. Apple may not honor your warranty if you replace the battery yourself (while the Mac is in warranty).
That does not mean it cannot actually be replaced by a user. Soldered in memory, such as in Retina MacBook Pros, is truly not user replaceable. But the battery on a "regular" MacBook Pro is actually quite easy to replace. They are held in place by two "tri wing" screws (I've read #0 size), and there is a single connector to the motherboard that unplugs easily - but use a plastic tool to do so to avoid shorting. The screwdriver needed is not in most people's toolbox, but easily found online.
A few months ago we had a 2010 MacBook Pro with a bulging battery. Quality online replacements were near $100. The Apple Store replaced it for $115. So there is not much savings by doing it yourself.
