Get Info for a folder doesn't provide you any Open With. The Desktop folder is in your home directory. So exactly what are you looking at?
Do you no longer have a folder in your home directory called Desktop (is that even possible)? Can you no longer drag things on to the desktop on your screen?
I click on my desktop and make the finder active.
I right-click (or file) get-info and get info on the desktop.
Under the General Drop-down, Kind is Anything
Further down Open With displays BBEdit.App
A regular folder, Desktop included, has Kind: Folder, and, you are right, no Open With is displayed.
If i open up a list of files under my userid, Desktop is there, and the Kind is listed as Anything.
I wouldn't really care except I can not create files of any kind including folders, nor move the ones that are there, on the desktop.
Rename that folder. Then log out and log back in to see if you have a new Desktop folder. If not create a new Desktop folder explicitly. Then log out and back in. See if any of these restore a normal working Desktop folder.
