iTunes cannot backup iPhone because an error occurred ??

Hi,

I recently updated my iPhone 4 to 5.1.1 and updated my iTunes to 10.6.3. Today I tried syncing my iPhone and after letting iTunes create a backup, it showed me this dialog: "iTunes cannot backup iPhone [name] because an error occurred." There was no error code included. I tried everything, I deleted my backups (i backed them up first (backupception lol)), I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, I rebooted my PC and iPhone. Does anyone know how to fix this? 😟

How did you even get to 5.1? It won't let me off of 4.2. Add why is it that when I tried my other computer it said everything will be deleted unless I use the original computer I downloaded the apps and music from? This is nonsense. I think it's all part of the conspiracy for Apple to control all our data. Why is it that you can only view pictures when you click on the iPhone in Windows explorer? All the other phones I've had show just like it's another drive with folders for your music, data, pictures, etc. iPhone only shows the pictures. What's up with that? Why is it that I can only upload the update from iTunes? Why not from the phone? This is beyond ridiculous.

Hey Robert I noticed you haven't posted in the thread since June 16th. Does this mean you were able to resolve your issue? I ask this because I am experiencing EXACTLY the same thing. To the letter. I tried everything you tried, including that link that ED3K posted (actually found that link before I came here) but still no luck.

I'm not sure what the problem is but the backups used to work fine. Now they don't. My last proper backup which I no longer have was some time in March I think. Or maybe it was May. I'm not quite sure.

Either way if you did resolve the issue could you please let me know??? Thanks a bunch!

Well I thought I'd do the nice thing and actually come back and update everyone on my particular situation. I had the same problem as the OP. Anyway I ended up doing a restore of my iPhone and everything seems to be working fine. I even restored from a backup, so it wasn't any data or apps that caused some sort of corruption otherwise the problem would still exist, theoretically right. I'm still not sure what it was. Oh and after the restore I had that bug come up where myy entire camera roll was blurry. Tried a factory reset and restore from backup again, actually three times or so and every single time I had that blurry cameral roll thing going on. Anyway this isn't the place for that particular issue or topic. Just thought I'd let you guys know.

For anyone else experiencing this issue I recommend doing the following, if all else fails. Backup everything to iCloud. Copy your camera roll pics to your computer. Uncheck camera roll backup from iCloud IF you have a ton of pics and a huge backup size. Otherwise it's fine leave as is. Then wipe using iTunes, that is do a factory restore. Then setup the device and since you don't have a recent backup you can restore using iCloud. The reason I said turn off the camera roll is so that the restore time drops. iCloud tends to take a long time to restore.

Hope this helps!
